Alagadi beach has been in it's usual state at the begining of the season and over the last few days volunteers from the turtle project have been clearing. We cleared around thirty black bags mostly just from the car parks where the bins had not been emptied for some time and things were rotting down and causing a stink. It would be nice if we could get together volunteers in the community to come down every other Monday to do a sweep of the beach. If we were all to meet at the goat shed in Alagadi at 17:00 we could make quite a difference. Monday 8th will be the first event.

We will be working on the Beledia to ensure that the bins are emptied in the car parks at least weekly and intend to patrol on Sundays handing out bags to beach users and providing information on the turtles.

I imagine we will begin to take bookings for night watches from between 5th and 8th June. As always bookings will only be taken from visitors in person at the goat shed.

It's a difficult one this.

The work of volunteers to clear rubbish etc in situations like this is brilliant.

But the danger is.....whilst ever other people are willing to do it , then the Belediye won't bother getting their own act together or spending any of their budget.

Hello Chief!

My wife and I are over 13th-27th June on holiday in Karaoglanoglu and seeing/aiding a night watch is high on our "to do" list - can you please give directions to the goat shed so that we can enroll when we get out there?

Cheers,

Ralph

We are over in August and would love to take part in a night watch. Is there any restriction on age as we have kids?

Anyone can join in on the night watches, I have taken both of my children aged 6 and 9, It can get very cold down there, even in the middle of summer so take blankets and snacks

To get to the Project, head east past Acapolco, just past the power station the road bends and sweeps around the bay, just us you enter this take the first left and follow the signs for St Kathleens, there should be signs for the Turtle Project to follow as well. The Goat shed is a small white house with a large green Turtle painted on the side.

Have fun

Thanks for the info Angela.

Just a really daft question but do you tend to see the turtles every night or is it just pot luck. Taking kids there when they might not see anything might be a bit too much for them.

It is pot luck, but as the season gets going the chances increase and most nights a Turtle will come up. I ended up going 3 times before seeing a nest being layed, but that was just really bad luck, but worth the wait. the kid loved sleeping on the beach and we actually decided to stay the whole night as the kid were happy sleeping as I had bought blankets, so we got to watch the sun rise. it was beautiful. There were also some hatchlings that were released one of the nights so we saw some Turtles at least. You do have the chance at times though out the night to leave and one of the students will take you back.

Please remember this is NATURE, turtles don't lay their eggs every night on demand. These self-funded volunteers who come here every year work very hard to help save these endangered reptiles. They take a small number down on the beach, which is closed, each night in a HOPE to witness this amazing event. Later in the year when the nests hatch, as long as you know what night there will be an excavation, anyone can watch the hatchlings released to the sea. But this will not be every night.

My wife and I went to Cyprus for our honeymoon and we made a trip to the Turtle Project. We were told that general rubbish on the beaches is one of the biggest threats to the turtles that they set free. We were shocked to see the amount of rubbish that was around us while visiting the project. We both took a walk along the beach and picked up some rubbish (which included some lilos).

What baffles us, was that we were the only people picking anything up. We would have thought that the project managers would have encouraged all those visiting the project to help pick up the rubbish. This would be an easy way of getting "volunteers" involved. Equally so, we would have thought that these project managers would have helped pick up the rubbish as well. The first post said that they do, but we did not see any evidence of this.

It seems like an obvious way to encourage people to help! Any thoughts?

while i agree its a good idear to have these gatherings for beach cleaning, why is it only done on this beach there are plenty of other beaches on this island that need the same doing.is it that you are only interested in turtles and not humans.we should be encouraging everyone to clean up the beaches, trying to educate the locals may take some time, but the brits come on we no better.dont we????

alagadi is not only the one beach which needs cleaning. In Karpaz where I am there are many dirty beaches and nobody really cares about them. I coudlnt see anyone yet who would come and clean....whats going on with government and volunteers???

Approach the Prison Service and request 'low risk' prisoners to be released for five hours or so a day to help clean up the beaches. Plenty of volunteers from jail would no doubt be more than happy to offer their services for a bit of daylight and fresh air exercise.

And it really helps tourism I'm sure. I expect it causes the Minister for Tourism sleepless nights....

Instead of being Negativenick why don't you become Positivenick for a few hours and write to the Minister of Tourism and vent your feelings to him about the rubbish on the beaches. We pick bags of rubbish up nearly everyday and yes we have written our letter more than once.Maybe the new government will come up with a solution when they get themselves sorted.

Disgarded rubbish any where is a disgrace.

This year is a record number for accountable Turtle Nests.

Over 180.

The cycle of turtles over a very much cared for period, is showing valuable evidence.

Let the students that care, explain it all.

We will help to remove the rubbish.

And let the new born baby turtle flap to sea.

Can you get local schools involved? Which Beledieye is it? Esentepe or Catalkoy - I know there has been some dispute about it.

Out for 2 weeks from Saturday, will try to get down at least one of the Mondays.

Robin/ChiefOfficer,

I dropped off a printer for you yesterday and a USB connection cable as well. Left a note with the guy who was there - he did not appear to know anything about it - so you would know which ink carts it needed.

Sorry I did not have any drivers for it but you can download them from the Internet at HP anytime you like.

Hope it was what you needed and that it arrived safe and sound for you.

Anybody can clean any beach they want to... don't let anybody stop you please...

The Alagadi clean went really well, Esentepe Orta School turned up on time and with happy faces too!

Esentepe Belediye brought their trucks and removed the collected debris..

Thanks to everyone who turned out it truly was a case of many hands make light work...
