Having read Saturdays Cyprus Today, a thought occured to me.... If you take away all the adverts, the articles thay have "cut and pasted" (or Nicked as my Uncle Percy used to say) from other newspapers and the twaddle written by the resident columinists... You are left with about 2 pages of local news..... so a TL a page then.....

I like the new lay out, good TV pages, and new puzzels, also think they put a good mixture of local and overseas news. As for advertising thats how they keep going, what newspaper doesn't. It has to be one of the better papers here and I buy it every week and have done for over ten years, well twice now, which is why the weather is only until Wednesday. Keep up the good work Cyprus Today!

Kiwikid Do you mean it is better than the Turkish language papers or the other couple of free rags in English? The Cyprus Today has no competition this side, the Cyprus Mail runs rings around it. In my opinion the paper has gone down drastically and Neg Nick is right in his assessment, if you want more puzzles I would think it cheaper to buy a puzzle book. Most of the news is copied from its Turkish language sister paper also produced by Asil Nadir and they do not charge 2TL for it. I will not be buying the paper again. Happy reading Codger

Yeah, why not slag off another business in N Cyprus? If you don't like it (or can't afford it at 2TL) don't buy it, but do we have to have these sour comments on everything that's going on here? I.

Codger; I don`t think they`ll miss your 2tl too much. Firestarter; Propaganda? I take it you mean they are essentially anti Greek. Who would credit it? a KKTC paper that looks out for the North. Go figure! Neg Nick; One of the joys of living on this island is the easy come easy go way of life, it must be so much fun to wake up every morning and look for things to moan at. Me? I`ll do as I have done for the past ten years on a Saturday, peruse whats happening and help the other half with the crosswords.

i love the crossword and i know when its saturday. Havent seen the wednesday edition. But guys its all about choice you buy or not. As for being a crook hasnt he created many jobs here. Bigger crooks were british and looked what happened. If I was a holiday maker the first thing I would do is to buy a local paper to see where to go and whilst its expensive to advertise every week it has to be done xxxxxxx

Why would anybody in the North advocate buying the South-based Cyprus Mail, which berates the North, Turkey and English expats, and did so with particluar gusto after the Orams ECJ case? Also the Mail has the advantage of being sold in the North, while Cyprus Today is banned in the South. So much for press freedom in the south!

I like Cyprus Today but agree there is a problem with getting sufficient local news to fill 2 papers a week. Hopefully the two editions will become a bit more substantial over time. The columns are far superior to the other local papers. Aussie

I only buy Cyprus Today to read the local news and read the classified pages. Wednesday's edition had rather a lot of new from the South, Turkey and the UK. The back page was covered with photos and there was too much football. Saturday's was slightly better, but why print pages of Digiturk TV listings when we can look at the Guide on the TV? I will only be buying the weekend edition in future. I'm not going to fork out 4tl a week when most of the news can be found on the TV, Internet or reading Cyprus44.

Hmm, I think I'd rather read a paper that presented the truth and the facts and let the reader make up his own mind - not some Mickey Mouse recycled press releases churned out by some has-been masquerading as a professional journalist. |

ilovekibris; And which paper in which country prints the facts and lets the readership make its own mind up? Cyprus Mail? Cyprus Weekly? Kibris/Cyprus Star? the Guardian? the Mail? the Sun? All papers reflect the views of their owners, Cyprus Today seems to be the only one that treads a middle ground this side of the island while Kibris does the same in Turkish where most of the papers are run by political parties or their supporters.

Cyprus Mail is the nearest to a professional operation for English language newspaper on the island. Cyprus Today kept quiet for years about the big scams even as people were being sucked in. Unforgiveable. They also carried huge adverts for Gary Robb and AGA before "discovering" years later - surprise surprise - he was a crook. Zero credibility, because CT actually pretended to be serious while the likes of Cyprus Star, Cyprus Times etc know everyone thinks they are s*** - and don't pretend to be anything else.

Strange that; seem to recall that back in 2002 CT was questioning how Gary Robb was granted citizenship by the then government. As for carrying adverts for AGA they are a business and in the eyes of the TRNC law AGA were perfectly legal so CT could and probably would have been sued for refusing to accept advertising from that source. Zero credibility; Cyprus Mail has a huge homes for sale section, are they to blame for all the customers who have been cheated in the south? They are newspapers nothing more, they don`t pretend to be the oracle or to turn bread into water, their reason for being is to inform.

I was talking to a bloke in Alsancak that works for Cyprus Today and he told me that it was banned in the South. Persoally speaking I have read, and continue to look at the Cyprus Mail on line but am sick of the quote marks used when describing the "government" of the "occupied territories", "president", "prime minister". The international community might not like it, but I live here part of the year and understand the TRNC runs its own affairs - well, except maybe for Turkey - but the Cyprus Mail ignores that. Cyprus Today always credits both Talat and Christofias with the correct term for their position. Fair in my view.
