As a diver who's been about a bit i.e whole of the south coast of england all the way to plymouth, mexico, thailand, gibraltar, and loads in the red sea i was really surprised when i went snorkelling today in lapta. Went off inbetween Roseys and Silver Rocks, I was in the water for half an hour saw 5-6 tiny fish and thats it. So where are they all? There wasn't that much litter there but eveyone I talk to say there isnt any fish anywhere? But still I see people fishing? For what?

There's an old saying from the british divers. . . 'the Med's dead'. . . . Same as the north sea, and the irish sea. . . . I read somewhere last week there'll be no fish in the north sea within the next 20 years. . . . Sad but true. . . . The rarest thing i've seen there was the lump fish. . . Big ugly thing, clings to rocks. . . In st Abbs. . circa 95. . . I think the only ones that survive will be the ones that don't taste too good.

well it makes sense as the waters warm through climate change we will expect more southern fish to move in watch out for GR8 whites and barracudas

The Med started to decline after the Egyptians began filling the lake (Lake Nasser) behind the Aswan dam in 1964. The Nile was the only river to flow into this end of the Med and trapping nutrients behind the dam has caused a gradual and continuing decline in the eco system of the Med. There are still fish out there (see Fishbase.net - scroll down to 'Information by Country/Island' then select 'Cyprus' and click 'marine') but not a lot inshore.

Spear fishing is a big problem for us divers. So that could be part of the problem. As you will know, divers have 'dive sites' which they specifically go to as they know there is always fish to see. I know very well that you can find a lot of groupers here, a hell of a lot in fact, plus loads of small soldier fish etc.. there are also octopus, moray eels, and turtles here. Nudibranches too! I admit that diving in shallow waters here proves to be pretty poor in the sense of fish spotting! But dive deeper and further out (if you have an RIB) and you are guaranteed to see something. Failing all that, book a dive with a dive centre and go diving with them. I recommend http://www.scubacyprus.com Happy diving

Graycoul, If you are in Lapta why not drop inot the dive centre at Hotel Sempati, I am sure that Drew or Caroline will be able to give you a list of good dive / snorkeling sites.
