I have been told that a good way to prevent spider infestation in your house is to have a goose egg in the house- anyone heard about this and any truth in it. I havent seen any goose eggs for sale either!

Horse chestnuts (conkers) in the corner of the room works. I live with some spider paraniod women and after placing one conker in the corner of each room haven't seen a spider (nore have the women thank goodness!!). Don't know where you'd get conkers in TRNC though!

Sorry Daisy, no conkers and chestnuts are different, Horse chestnuts (conkers) do not taste very nice and I don't think you can eat them.

But under new EU health and safety rules, you have to wear goggles to handle them. Or am I getting mixed up with the stupid rules that children now have to wear goggles in school when they play with them.

They have to leave the room to go back to their nest to try and find their goggles. Upon realising that they are spiders and don't posess the said items, don't return, in case Health and safety officials are in waiting.

Suntanman you crack me up! Sorry I don't know why conkers deter spiders I am just a user who was given the tip and it works for me. I live in an old cottage ( til I move to TRNC later this year) and when I moved in the ladies I live with were forever freaking out when they saw a spider. I was advised to put a conker in the corner of each room, which I did and we haven't seen a spider since (two years)

Hi I have heard about the goose eggs. A friend of mine recently got bitten by a spider and had to visit hospital due to the severity of the bite. Since then quite a few people mentioned about getting a goose ege which she has. You can buy them in Starling ( she brought from one opposite Pork Shop) i think they are by the deli counter and i believe they cost 25ytl for a plain one or 35 ytl for one that is decorated. Apparently most of the locals swear by them!! Hope this helps

Very interesting, do you leave them raw or do you cook them and peel them or what? How often do you have to change them? I don't fancy importing a Horse chestnut tree!!

Well - all VERY interesting. My son was bitten by a spider whilst in Australia - no harm done, but he has a scar. I wonder if a solution would be planting a Horse Chestnut tree in your living room and surrounding it by goose eggs. Wouldn't look particularly attractive, but you wouldn't get any bleeding spiders in your house! PS Don't actually mind spiders too much - except for the big hairy ones that look small until they 'stand' up. Yeukxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx J

Just found this: "Conkers have been carried in the pocket to help prevent piles and rheumatism, and used in wardrobes to keep away moths. According to a letter which appeared in the Daily Telegraph, conkers are an effective way to keep spiders out of the house: conkers, placed in the corners of a room and behind pieces of furniture, reduce the number of spiders venturing into the room. However, over a period, the conkers dry up and lose their efficacy."

I think this goose egg/spider thing may be superstitious nonsense, but I do know that if you eat a gherkin a day, you'll never be struck by lightning. I know this works because I do and I haven't.

This is now fascinating me!! I have discovered in the Uk there is a spray called 'No more spiders and guess what is in it.......chestnut extracts!: " * Non-harmful spider deterrent spray. * It creates a natural border preventing spiders from wishing to enter your home. * Consisting of natural chestnut extracts and clover leaf oil. * Deters spiders but doesn’t harm them."

I think the conkers have it! I couldnt find anything about goose eggs on the internet but there is plenty about the conkers and spiders. As i have a large horse chestnut tree in my garden in the UK and can feel a bit of local business coming on, and i am open for orders!

Glad I could be of help david161. I'll book eight conkers for next year when their in season. As was correctly stated they have to be changed (every year is best) or they do loose their effectiveness as they dry out. Earlybird where can you buy the spray, will take up less room in my luggage than the conkers!!
