Heatstroke is when the body becomes overheated because of prolonged exposure to heat or a high fever. It can occur suddenly causing the patient to beome unconcious within minutes. There may be Headache, dizziness,restlesness, confusion, very fast pulse, high Temperature around 40C. You aim is to lower the body temperature as quickly as possible.

1. Move the patient to a cool place and remove any excess clothing. PHONE FOR AMBULANCE.

2. Wrap the patient in a cold wet sheet or keep sponging with cold water until temperature drops to approx 37.5C. Also if a fan available use this obviously at a safe distance from any water you are using,.

3. When the temp drops to a safe level, replace the wet sheet with a dry one and keep an eye on them until help comes.

IF the patient becomes gets worse or is unconcious open the airway,check breathing and pulse. Place in recovery position.



Tip of the Week: NEVER PUT PATIENT IN THE FRIDGE /FREEZER TO COOL DOWN!!!!

Now Nurseawful you have spoiled it for me as I always put people in my freezer to cool down, now I will have to follow your instructions
