He got "overwhelming support" yesterday from the vast majority of m.p.s and loud applause. Why pick on his nationality for what you see as his short-comings? There are Scots too who want him to go. (SNP votes increased substantially in election)

The first king to sit on the United Throne was a Scotsman. The English seem to prefer a scotsman at the helm rather than one of their own. Thats why there have been so many Scottish Primeminsters. Not only that in Tony Blairs goverment 50% of the cabinet were Scottish. Gordon Brown cut that percentage down thats where he went wrong.

We didn't have the birch in Scotland - it was the belt, or tawse, a nasty leather strap with about 4 divisions (like a mini cat-on-ninetails) and it sure was effective! I should know! Never had it myself (my sons did!) but hated watching it, and must have been one of the last teachers to have to use it. I'm glad it's gone.

The belt, ahh the memories. I would point out though that after recieving the belt I never once considered the error of my ways, I was far to pre-occupied with the thought "that teacher is a bast#$d". Ref msg 7. Why would there be any english in the scottish or welsh assembles. there are only scots and welsh in the british parlaiment or MEP's. If there were an English parlaiment then we wouldn't be there (the poor down trodden scots and welsh that is) On another point Wyn, the house of parlaiment bar used to be free so the jocks were never at the back of the queue. I love the fact that as mentioned there are 646 MP's and its all 1 mans fault and the fact that he is Scottish has got so much to do with it. The fact that he is the lead poltician in the UK and the world has gone to crap is all his fault. I agree he should go but I doubt that anyone will do a much better job with the tools (MP's) they have.

Ilovekibris When I was told to use it by my superior (against my wishes) I was teaching at Sanquhar - Dumfries & Galloway. At the time they had Tory local government and it had already been done away with in Labour areas. All teachers used it to my recollection. When I was at school every teacher used it, and they hadn't all "lost it" Quite the reverse. I learned that some kids are so brave it would make no difference to belt them, and others well, they came out of the woodwork on my later return when it had been abolished! p.s. I was mainly at schools in England - about 10 of them!

Why Falkirk? Excuse my ignorance! Actually, I would consider the kilt to be a Highland garment, and it amuses me to see Lowlanders wearing it at every occasion when they don't know more than perhaps one word of the language ofthat culture ( the Gaels) i.e. "Slainte" (sorry can't do the accents over the e)

Hi Phylis, Why Falkirk, you have to use a bit of Scottish thinking for that! On the subject of wearing of the kilt and being someone from south of Gretna I am the proud owner of the Grampian Tartan (having lived there for 16 years) and enjoy wearing it. One of the first times I wore it was in Manchester at a wedding. Talking about languages Doric still confuses me!

Ours was blue/green tartan . but my surname was Duffy and there are lots in scotland. Guido wanted to be married in a kilt (with his legs I dont think so) so we actually went to glasgow to find the one. I know many of my fathers family went to scotland to live in the bad days and I do have loads of relies living there so I guess they have thier own now xxxx

Hi Lilli, Ged got marriied in the Kilt Grampian tartan as we lived in Aberdeenshire for 16yrs (5 in Aberdeen and 11 in Portlethen Aberdeenshire) He is actually the proud owner of kilt ! and he hails from Manchester !! We both think he's entitled to wear the kilt married to a Scot in Scotland where we lived at the time and before anyone jumps in we don't give a hoot who says otherwise. by the way don't worry about the legs they all look the same after a few beers Cathy x

Just saw this post after being away from 44 for a few days and am glad to see that what started out as a seemingly pointless and a little anti-scotland (in my opinion anyway) has now turned into something more interesting! Cant help thinking that the original post was just to get a reaction from us scots but ah well fit can ye dee! The topic has seemed to move on from that and onto the fine foods of scotland! İm very jealous that some of you sem to have lorne and haggis in your freezers and wonder if any of you could order some for me next time you contact your suppliers!! Ps. İ also think anyone can wear tartan if they so wish. Seeing anyone in a kilt makes me proud and happy regardless of where they are from! AND catalkoykid - i think calling men who wear kilts "trannys" is a little harsh dont you. Everyone is entitled to their national dress and you should not be insulting those who are proud to wear it.

The largest single English population live in England, a constituent country of the United Kingdom. They are generally believed to be a mixture of several groups that have settled in the area, including Britons (or Brythons), Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Normans. Couple that with the fact that although there is no recognised national dress of England most of the possible considerations look like dresses with trousers underneath. Beefeaters, Chelsea pensioners and Yoeman of the guard. The exception of course are the pearly kings and Morris dancers but lets not get into them. And to top it all off the Kilt was invented by an englishman, makes you wonder why we wear them really

Proger1 The kilt was originally a very long garment which was wrapped around the body, kilted at the waist, and flung over the shoulder. It was made for warmth in the harsh Highland winters. Can't see where the Englishman invention comes in? It just developed to suit conditions of time, and had little resemblance to the formal kilts later adopted by the regiments.

Absolutely correct phylray and the modern equivelant is the Kilt with the addition of the plaid which goes over the shoulder and is damn heavy and hot in the summer. The Englishman designed the modern day kilt (the philabeg) as it is known today with the addition of the modern colours in order for Queen Victoria to easily identify the different clans, before that the kilts were of the same colours and the check patterns were different between clans. My point was to try and deter the english from hinting that it is not a hetrosexual garment by pointing out that they too have long skirt like clothing in the histories and if it is not hetrosexual the fact that an englishman, Thomas Rawlinson had something to do with it but then I was bored so it's not important, I am very proud to wear the kilt or philabeg
