Palma itself is great to explore and you can get the light railway up through the orange groves and mountains to Soller. To the west past Santa Ponsa is Andraix, very nice. Portals Nous has a very swish marina with great bars and restaurants.

Re msg 1 NorthWest Corner very mountainous - *I* like the area around Puerto Pollensa and there is a great beach in the NW corner - at Cala de Sant Vincenc, the lighthouse This is a good website you can click on photos of places .. http://www.the-mallorca-map.com/

lc as I understand it the south coast of the island was first deveoped for tourism in the 1960's so from magaluf on one side to palma nova at the other it is largely big hotel blocks from that era and quite "busy" too the north and northeast part of the island was less accessible you have places over the mountains like peuto soller polensa and formentor alcudia ("the hill") in arabic to the north-east has become populr it is more recent so better blended-in and lower impact continuing south along the coast from alcudia is a very large inland reserve and there are a few hotels dotted along on the coast there too
