The United States Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurosian Affairs Philip Gordon has said that the United States is ready to take into consideration of playing a more direct role on the Cyprus issue if such a move will be useful.

Mr Gordon told the Sub-Committee for Europe of the US Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee that the United States will continue to support the current talks being carried out by the two sides in Cyprus under the auspices of the UN Good Offices Mission.`As President Obama said, we are willing to offer all the help sought by the parties as they work towards a just and lasting settlement that reunifies Cyprus into a bizonal and bicommunal federation` he added.

Stressing that Washington is ready to take into consideration of playing a more direct role on the Cyprus issue if such a move will be useful, he said `like the question of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey, a settlement in Cyprus should bring a win-win solution to everyone. Both sides should seriously benefit from a political solution. We will work actively to achieve this`. Responding to a question, he reminded that both the US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said during their visits to Turkey that there is a real opportunity for a solution in Cyprus within the year.He also noted that the settlement of the Cyprus problem is in interest of the United States.
