A total of 83 traffic accidents occurred in the TRNC during the week of June 1 and 7. According to the police statement, 22 of these accidents caused injuries to 26 people, while 61 accidents caused material damage. The total cost of damage in all these accidents was calculated as 33,150TL. The distribution of the accidents according to regions are: Nicosia, 34; Famagusta, 21; Kyrenia, 16; Guzelyurt, 4; Iskele, 8. During the same period, a total of 597 traffic offences were reported. It seems to me as though it get's worse in the summer. Tourists perhaps?

Unfortunately there are some mad drivers about even more so than London! When you consider the population of the TRNC and compare that to say a London Borough - TRNC about the same population to one borough ( exceptions are merton and croydon) there would be an outcry at the no of accidents and fatalities per Borough. As it is there are so many high value and high powered cars, in the TRNC, now driven by those who put one foot on the clutch and the other foot on the fire ( what are brakes or gear box for?) and off they go - launching, lurching and fishtailing their way through the mayhem of traffic as though no-one else exists - yes it has got worse but I dont think its the tourists - theymay not be able to find their way easily but the problems lie locally, I am afraid to say.

Tourists perhaps?...perhaps not? last year I was involved in an accident....a Turk going too fast hit me at speed from behind. ( He skidded on full brakes for 20mtrs in dry conditions ) Spent 5 hours at the police station with a TC friend, the car was repaired within 48 hours, and had a replacement car...all paid for by the guy who hit me..out of his own pocket. Wonder what the official statistics show...tourists / turks / uk pats / or tcs?

I agree with watchdog. I do think it is the locals and not tourists. I am amazed on a daily basis here at the stupidity of some of the locals driving.

I agree, Amber. The locals driving is sometimes quite hairy, especially along the main road through Lapta, where we live.

i have been back for 2 months now the roads get worse everytime I come back they are MAD,We saw an old lady get on to a crossing the cars were going around her. Do they get a fine for bad driving perhaps we need more cameras to catch them,or better driving tests thats if there is such a thing here. Nothing surprises me now after all this is Cyprus. xx
