Hi Littlenige, which crossing was this? I know that at Pyla they have had CCTV fitted and depending on who is around they have to be seen to be doing the right thing. We even had one guard apologise as he checked our suitcases as we were heading back to UK for a break! It's good to have the heads up though

The Customs at Bayamardu/Pergamos that for some reason everyone seems to call Pyla is manned by Greeks who work on the Sovereign Base Area hence the more thorough search. You will ALWAYS be stopped at this crossing so if you are trying to bring in something you should not, then try a differnt crossing!

Well said Carrie; Beyermudu not Pyla and the SBA police that man the crossing do the bidding of the ROC with the blessing of the British high commission.

I cross regularly and my car is searched more often at Agios Nikolas than any other crossing. Crossing at Metahan twice this week no hold ups at all. When enquiring recently on behalf of some friends about a concern they had re border crossing, I was advised by the border police at Agios Nikolas that almost any other crossing would be more likely to turn a blind eye to pernicketty visa requirements than the one on the SBA.

Dear CarrieRBag re msg 6 >>The Customs at Bayamardu/Pergamos that for some reason everyone seems to call Pyla is manned by Greeks who work on the Sovereign Base Area hence the more thorough search. You will ALWAYS be stopped at this crossing so if you are trying to bring in something you should not, then try a differnt crossing!<< Hi, just to correct you (in a nice way !) the SBA employ TCs and GCs - not "Greeks" and they are more thorough - as 1/ the Green Line regulations are enforced 2/ The RoC can NEVER say the SBA is a sieve - allowing illegal contraband / immigrants - they tried - in the past to say that :( This applies at both the SBA crossing points - checking is normally much stricter ... The officers may SPEAK Greek - but please don't assume they are all GCs.. they won't be... Nige - the Green Line regs ARE definitive http://ec.europa.eu/cyprus/documents/turkish_community/greenline.pdf point 4 is worth reading re "border".. ;)

we crossed at Bayamardu last thursday and its the nicest border patrol officer that we have ever come across. He was polite and jokey ,he hoped that we had had a good holiday and even said come again soon.!!!!! he did ask if we were aware of the regulations regarding cigs and alcohol and we all told him yes we were but that none of us smoked and we had no drink. We didn't even have to get out of the car. Can anyone tell me exactly how many crossings there actually are? Liz

Rules are rules. If in doubt, leave it out. Simples. Metahan was getting a bit picky the other week when I went through but no big deal. It is their job. Probably a few spoil it for the many. Chegs

re msg 16 Liz W How many crossing points? = 6 Nicosia: Ayios/ Metahan-Kermia - RoC checkpoint Pyla - ( P(B)ergamos) / Pile / Beyarmudu - nr Dhekylia Army base - so manned by SBA - Sovereign Base Area Police Strovilia / Akyar near Agios Nikolaos - also known as "Black Knight" / two or four mile crossing - also an SBA Police manned crossing, close to Famagusta Astromeritis/Zodhia - the westernmost crossing near Morphou/Güzelyurt. Pedestrian crossings in Nicosia: Ledra Palace - the most etherial crossing as you walk across 200+ metres of no mans land Ledra Street
