We ( that is my husband and I) were charge 15 YTL for a plastic bag (not requested) when we stopped at a picnic site just outside Karisyaka. The plastic bag was interestingly called a "table charge "=ie use of wooden picnic table for 15 mins whilst we ate.

How is selling any drink "by the measure" a rip-off? Surely the whole point of measures is standardization and the prevention of "short" measures.

racoonchic, that is awful - not only did you get ripped off but you had to put up with that kind of behaviour too. That's my biggest problem with businesses here: you can't complain or even offer constructive criticism because you end up with abuse.

Abbey Bell Tower in Bellapais - not only are we now charged 3 lira to park in Bellapais, which goes to some football club or other (not Bellapais), but we had a bottle of efes, a small glass of wine, a nescafe and a Turkish coffee (which costs next to nothing usually) all for the princely sum of 20 lira........won't be going there again! No wonder the place is empty!

mrsgee, I have no problem with your comments on the restaurant, BUT, please will you all understand that Tatlisu Football Club IS the Bellapais (Beylerbeyi) Football club, so named because a large majority of Beylerbeyi residents are 1974(ish) refugees from the village of Tatlisu in the South. They reformed their football club in Beylerbeyi once they had resettled. You live in the village, you really should try to learn some of their history, then you may be made more welcome!

Went in to the Ömrüm Eczanesi (pharmacy) next to Tempo and asked to for Loperamid, the said they had Imodium and wanted 100 lira for 100 tablets. Shocked at the price I asked if they had anything cheaper but they replyed that imported medicin is expensive. Unwillingly I paid the 100 lira only to be told by friend the very next day that there is a Turkish equivalent called Lopermid and it costs only 2.50 tl for 20 tablets. Extremly angry I went back the same day and gave them a good shouting. As I had broken the blisterpack on the Imodium they wouldn't refund me at first but when other customers started leaving the premises they finally agreed to give my money back. When looking I found the Turkish Lopermid on a shelf. Needless to say I wont be going back.

"You live in the village, you really should try to learn some of their history, then you may be made more welcome!" Sort of sums up the racist and negative attitude to non locals. Does one get a history test before ordering drinks? Wonder why trade suffers?

hector, I agree with you on the racist primitive outlook thing. But I reckon a good few expats ask for it with their dumb ignorance and attitude. It's almost an Uncle Tom situation with their "pet" locals. No wonder so many get shafted and in doing so spoil it for the people who come after them.

PaddyPower1 then there was the ' Win a Villa for a fiver' with Victorian Homes. Did the winner ever get possession of his property? As far as I know nobody got possession of a property. The people involved have all skipped the North. Two of them went South. As for the guy from Victoria Homes - who knows!!!!
