Yesterday 7 lorry drivers arrived at the cement factory in Karpaz to be greeted by several police. The police informed them that A New Law was ineffect which states that no lorries can be driven on public roads between 6.30am and 8.00am. All drivers were given 10 points on their licenses and 190 tl fine. This New Law has not been announced anywhere in the media. The average driver earns 1,200 tl per mnth, and many will struggle to pay this fine. Now lorry drivers are not 'loved' by most road users, But they are necessary. My Turk/ Cyp husband is a driver, He starts at 6.00am. Due to this new law he must now start at 5.00am Then at 6.30, whevever he is, He must pull over, and sit twiddling his thumbs till 8.00am, Then he can continue his journey. Lorries cabs are very hot often reaching 120 degrees, Now he has an extra one and a half hours to his day. I feel that this is detrimental to road safety as the drivers will be driving earlier, longer and of course hotter

Also perhaps to keep the noise levels down at that time of the morning for the Tourists. Perhaps they are starting to think of them as well ???????

Hector..Try living without them. You will probably starve to death after 2weeks,your car will come to grinding halt for lack of fuel, and your rubbish would be like a mountain outside your front door. You may not like them but they are absolutely neccessary for this world to function...

When the lorry drivers strike occurred in England, the same bunch of lorry haters were screaming blue murder because things were running out at the supermarkets and that only lasted a week......

Pearlbayer..It was 1981 if my memory serves me right...First time I ever tried to draw dole money and was told I was on strike, which I was not,we had been laid off because we would not cross the picket lines.Long time ago..things have moved on since then, but I wish people would realise that we cannot do without the old lorry and his trusty driver!!!

YES I AGREE, lorries are required, this law lengthens their working day, and means they are working longer in the heat increasing the risk of road accidents, also the knock on affect as the construction sites are getting the loads delivered later, means they are working later too, which annoys local residents. I feel it is an unjust new law.

Helper ...Could not agree with you more, but the people who make these laws have no idea what it really means to the person who has to comply with the changes. The same happened in the UK when the European Driving Laws were intro duced, drivers went from working a strict 60hrs a week to up to75/80hrs.....
