Drove into Girne yesterday afternoon and counted 6 men, presumably brits, wandering about stripped to the waist. Now don't get me wrong, I'm no prude - these were not young, fit men with six packs - more like party sevens!

No, seriously this is ok in your back yard or the beach - but do we really have to see it walking along the main road/in the supermarket/in cafes?

I'm sure being a muslim country the locals (especially females) must find this embarrising.

And guys (you must know who you are) not even a good suntan - more like sunburn.

Come on fellas - we ladies have to cover up - hows about a thin shirt or vest when you leave the beach please?

Maggie (rather hot & bothered so probably why I'm complaining)

Well done for confronting that woman. It is just as disgusting and offensive as men walking round shops and towns in just a pair of shorts. They would not do this in UK. Tesco's, Asda, et al would ask them to leave.

I also find Brits on holiday showing vast amounts of flesh disgusting and am ashamed to be British. I thought it was just me, until I spoke to someone from Trinidad, who told me they had to put up notices in supermarkets, telling their customers to wear a shirt!!I also hate to see Brits walking around without footwear in the supermarkets. Do you see poor Turkish/ Cypriot children running around without shoes here?

I am pleased to see this topic, and interested to hear that I am not alone in my opinions.

Just a thought but do we actually know that the offending persons are ' brits ' ? It appears all to easy these days to class any offending caucasian person abroad as a ' brit '

And I agree, cover up when in town whatever their nationality.

Sadly having heard several of the Great Unclothed speak, they are Brits. It really does a compete lack of respect for others wandering around in a state of undress. It doesn't make any difference, size, colour or creed - Please cover up and show some respect for fellow human beings! And that doesn't mean a knotted hankie on the head either - or sandals and grey socks

Maggie

I thought it was only me having those thoughts, even in the evening you see Brits walking about just in shorts and as you say its the overweight ones that seem to do it more, puts you over you food,

I know the age of suited and booted have gone (shame) but a pair of shorts is a disgrace and a lot of them are showing their builders bums AGH

should be shooed out of shops

Well done Maggie for pointing this out, maybe the guilty ones will cover up next time (You know who you are)

I think it is lack of respect for the local people but i personally do not find it that offensive.

You can accept it if they have a six pack but you can not accept it if they have a bit of a gut? umm At least they are comfortable in them selves to be able to do this, i say good on them if they are happy with their bodies.

I have been to many countries where i have seen women walking around in there bikini tops and shorts and gone shopping, i have seen men walk around in the shorts they are on HOLIDAY!!!!

If the shop owners find it offensive then they should put a sign in the entrance of their shop saying please wear correct clothing. I have seen this in certain countries.

So if you see a child walking around with only their shorts on is this offensive?

Tuttut Msg 19

I don't think you read or understood my point at all!

I did not say I could accept this if it was young men with a six pack! please don't misquote me!

I said dressing (or should I say undressing) like this is fine on the Beach or in your own back yard/garden but in most civilised societies it is NOT acceptable in the street, in restuarants etc!

You say you have been to many countries so you will know that it is actually an offence in some countries not to be properly dressed in public!

As for children I would hope that resposible parents would want to cover their little ones up so as not to get burned in the very strong sun we have here.

This started out as quite a lighthearted post - I was merely hoping it would jolt some of the offending topless men into covering up. I think you are clearly quite young and it's a shame you have no sense of humour and obviously not much sense of decency!

Have a nice day

msg 19.I dont think it is offensive to see a child with no top on, depending on there age. But adults should respect other countries way of life and act accordingly. I must admit I don't like to see men walking along Morecambe promenade with no shirts on, but some of the girls dress so scantily it is nearly as bad.

Hi Maggie, yes thats true but even in the winter some of them wear next to nothing. Back to your original point when we are over we often comment on this. I havn't got a six pack, perhaps a four, but still would never go without a shirt, except at pool or beach

Agree you see it all over the world where people are on holiday. I think the whole point is that this is, at the end of the day, a moslem country and we should respect their values and traditions.

Whoops think i upset Maggie not intended, sorry..... i was just making a comment.

I was commenting on if people are happy with their bodies why can't they show them, if people are on holiday why can they not do this? it is done in other countries, if the country does not accept this type of dress then they should write this at the airport on entry or in holiday brouchures (which countries do ie Dubai etc). If shop owners do not like it make a sign up to advise people only acceptable dress is to be worn in this shop.

I actually do have a very good sence of humour and yes i am of the younger (well not so young any more)generation.

My son often asks if he an take his top off as he finds it cooler and as long as i know he has factor 50 on i allow him to do so, he nows when he is hot and he also knows where the shade is to play and walk in.

Bogeyman.... yep whoops maybe i have just given them ammo sorry.

NO MORE OFFENSIVE THAN MUSLIMS WEARING BURKERS AND PYJAMAS IN THE UK OR SIKEHS WANTING TO CARRY KNIVES what about hari krishners lot wearing those bright orange robes.

The thing is if you want to be offended then you will be if you do not like what you see look away it is really easy.

It's absolutely disgusting to see Brits walking round with no tops on anywhere in public especially when their wrinkly old bits are hanging down around their waist, and that's just the blokes, keep it for home folks.

Hi Tuttut Msg 26 no offence taken! As the title of the thread suggests I simply wondered if it was just me that finds the sight of a sweaty british male, stripped to the waist (and often showing 'builder's bum'), wandering about the shopping streets and in and out of cafes offensive? Obviously some folk don't mind this at all! fine!

As for notices at Airports, entrances to shops, cafes etc - is that really neccessary? next we'll have to put up signs reminding people to say please & thankyou etc..........come to think of it that's maybe not such a bad idea! lol

Think that you will find that it is just 'one type' of person that now is coming over to n.c that used to frequent Spain! Cheap deals etc. Dont mean to sound snobby, but sweaty mens bodies whilst shoping makes me want to puke! Plus it was always thought to be common to walk about and to drink at bars with no t/shirt, or shirt on, expecially of a night. yuk.

I thought it was a secular state, like Turkey, with majority of Moslems.

N.Cyprus is a very tolerant place compared to many, but a little more

modesty would command a bit of respect!

There are always people who think they are being daring (!) by ignoring

local custom. Saw a girl in Abu Dhabi walking with boyfriend in main

street with bottom hanging out of very short shorts. ( lucky not to be

arrested there)

I had to cover my shoulders before going into St. Marks in Rome, and I was

dressed quite modestly I thought, only sleeveless top. But that's religion.

Here in Scotland, whenever the sun comes out (and it is really warm now)

many young men bare their white torsos and can be seen in the streets.

The young women are half naked just about all year! But they're young!

some people are actually offensive in clothes never mind near naked.

such as rather large ladies in trousers that are 2 sizes to small for them thats offensive.

god made us how we are like littlenige says look away.

i think its more of a hygiene thing rather then looks. its not against the law and like it or not people will do it for vanity or ignorance or both. i would rather see six fat blokes showing builders bum then seeing children with no seat belts on in cars or people with no skid lids on on motor scooters

other europeans walk round like this its just not the british.

good topic though maggie if we all agreed the world would be strange

Hi maggiandbernie, yep we must be a little bit snobby or should I rephrase it and say perhaps we have a little bit more 'class' eh!

Couldnt agree more with the posts above re fat women/men in under sized clothes, it always makes me shudder when these very fat young girls were these hipsters, their fat hanging out, horrible.

Think that in a few years time the youngsters will look at their photos and will wonder why they thought they looked so good. Still, cant all be perfect can we!!lol

Happyfeet Msg 42

I have no problem with anyone running around the beach scantily clad! I'm talking about walking down the High st or in the supermarket etc. I'm quite sure Brad Pitt & George Clooney would have better mannaers than that!

Bogeyman Msg 43

Can't speak for everyone but I always try to dress accordingly when going into town/out for lunch ect - i.e. capri trs or long shorts and short sleeved t shirt - I keep my bikinis & short shorts/suntops for sunbathing on the beach or in the garden. Come to think of it you don't see many burkhas about in TRNC do you?

Well I guess on this forum we're pretty much 50/50 split over how attractive a man is with his sun burnt belly hanging over the top of a pair of scanty boxer shorts eh?

Maybe I'll get myself a water pistol and start cooling them down when I see them on the road ha ha ha

Kervansaray appeared to be a topless beach today, along with bring your own beer, for one particular group of Brits. And that was just the WOMEN. It's a shame they couldn't understand the comments people were making about them. Actually by the look of them they probably wouldn't have cared.

There is NO requirement in Islam, Qu'ran or Hadith, that Moslem women should wear a Burqa - that is a means of subjugation practised by extremist Moslem males, their rationale being - it stops men being filled with lust if they don't see female flesh - which says EVERYTHING about them, and NOTHING about Moslem women. As in virtually every Faith on this planet, it is all about control and sex. When in a Moslem country I dress modestly when in public places and would only wear swimwear at the beach or the garden, that aside, why would I want to see any male or female of any faith in swimwear in a restaurant or shop? When in Rome, I had to cover my hair and arms before I could see the Sistine Chapel, my sleeveless dress and uncovered head was not acceptable. I have NO religious belief whatsover, but was happy to conform to their requirements.

England follow President Sarkozy's ban on Burqas? I totally agree - sadly though our Government is gormless, weak, spineless and avaricious.

Hey come on! They are holiday makers! You can spot them a mile off, no shirts, white trainers, white beer bellies! We have probably all done the same thing on holidays abroad before we realised! Instead of looking at them, get yourselves down to Alagadi beach and book to see the turtles laying. Wow, what an experience last night. We watched a beautiful green turtle lay her eggs, bury them and then go back to the sea. It was a most magical experience one not to be missed. Can't wait to see the hatching - much better then watching white bellied males!

Maggie, agree entirely. These topless morons have no place on this beautiful island.

Have you noticed most of the men have yuckee tatoos to match?

I agree with you there dizzycows. They look awful, but maybe to their

way of thinking they are trying to get that gorgeous, tanned look which

make them look slimmer! Sad, really, as there are so many warnings about

skin cancer which we fair-skinned are vulnerable to.

Yes drive these orrible shower of olidaymakers into the sea! No place for them in a tourist resort! The locals must be orrified at their bare chests. Pah for their money, who needs it?

Meanwhile I can't stand orrible smokers who puff away in the street and I end up inadvertently inhaling their orrible smoke.

Let's be honest - cheap and dodgy knock-off property will always attract this class of people. You get them on internet forums as well, but at least then you don't have to look at our listen to them.

Beach, Street, Road, Shop, pool side, all public places !!! what is the big deal ?.. Does it really change a persons appeal and appearance depending on where they are. Do they look less (or more) appealing on the street !!!.

I Witnessed A survey in the work place (home Office) the theme, Sexual Harrassment, the Guilty parties were without exception all ugly brutes geeks and or wimps, the guys and gals that got away with it were, again without exception, you guessed it handsome, cute, with boobs, six packs, you get the picture?.

Live and Let Live.

PS, Snobbery, is actually a very ugly trait.

Hector and Gottheyips - It has nothing to do with snobbery - it has everything to do with respect. Turkish Cypriots have an individual culture, the same as we and every other country. Some cultures are similar, others (like ours and Turkish Cypriots) are very different. If we expect and demand other cultures assimilate and integrate into our country, why do you find it odd that Turkish Cypriots would appreciate our respecting them - they live and work in Cyprus, it is their home and their country - some of us live there, some of us holiday there - it is NOT just a holiday destination. Who are we to demand they accept a laissez faire attitude to clothes (or not) in shops and restaurants and walking along the street - it was their home before any of us bought property there - I don't see it as hardship to consider their feelings, to compromise somewhat - when off the beach - if we want respect, shouldn't we also give it?

lol if i heard these from turks id perhaps understand but coming from europeans im quite shocked. im a cypriot myself and honestly do not see why youre all making such a big deal out of it. you will not always like what you see and critisizing everytime you dont like something will not help change it. SO WHAT IF THEY DID NOT HAVE A TOP ON FOR GODS SAKE!? you see them at the beach like that dont you? whats the difference?? I dont mean to get on anyones nerves, and I dont like to argue but I think you are all taking it a bit too far. Especially by talking about their weight which is not nice at all. Ive heard others say this too and its true, all people seem to want to do on this forum is complain!

Please people, its a hot place and it is a hot holiday spot and if people want to let their hair down a little on their break from all the stress & work, then let them!

And one of you said here that she/he walked up to a girl in a bikini top and see through top and asked if she would

Yes I agree that some of the sights can be a bit stomach churning and more respect should be shown, but also feel that TRNC does need tourists and we don' t want to be putting them down when they are here. - Unless their behaviour is totally offensive .

Not one mention of LNige and his thong.

Surely that falls under the “disgusting views” category??

They arn't doing any harm are they? They are on holiday, let them walk around topless. They will be gone in a couple of weeks!

And if its the Turkish you are seeing topless, then who are we to tell them what to do? Its their country more than ours!

What's the big deal with going to the beach? It's where dirt meets water. I've got a bathtub and an imagination, I'm staying indoors."

I agree, tattoos are ok for individuals each to their own, I have one in memory of my dad who died in Novmber but not on display in public places with bodies exposed. Tacky and cheap! For the pool or beach!
