In the 1400's a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb.

Hence we have 'the rule of thumb'

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented.

It was ruled 'Gentlemen Only...Ladies forbidden'...and thus, the word GOLF entered into the English language.

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history:

Spades - King David

Hearts - Charlemagne

Clubs -Alexander the Great

Diamonds - Julius Caesar

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle.

If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died because of wounds received in battle.

If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

Love trivia but....

Think the golf one is an urban myth! Believe that it is derived from language, Dutch.

Rule of thumb, was that not from people using the end of their thumb as a measurement?

Think the Flintstones one is questionable as well, Mary Kay and Johnny is sighted as the first.

Now I feel a terrible party pooper. Be interested if anyone can expand though.

You might think that New Zealand has the most sheep per capita in the world, but here's a fact to turn every antipodean farmer green with envy.

While New Zealand only boasts 20 sheep per person, the lucky lads on the Falkland Isles, with over 700,000 sheep to 2,000 people get 350 each!

It has been estimated that 17% of human beings are left handed which is roughly the same figure as for gorillas and chimpanzees.

If you are right handed you tend to chew on the right hand side of your mouth and if you are left handed you tend to chew on the left hand side of your mouth.

Two out of five American women dye their hair.

The average adult falls asleep seven minutes after turning the light off.

The average human being will accidentally eat about a pound in weight of insects over the course of a lifetime.

Right handed people, on average, live nine years longer than left handed people!

On average 15% of people secretly chew their toenails.

That means that as we have 6045 members on the forum 906 of you secretly chew your toenails.

Who is going to own up to that? )

RE msg 5, colly> Think the golf one is an urban myth! Believe that it is derived from language, Dutch. <

=> I didn't dare to say it... But it's true. A very, very old game (also played indoors) and it's called in Dutch: kolf (pronunciation almost the same as in English: golf). Locally it's still played (province of Noord-Holland, area: Zaanstreek, North of Amsterdam).
