Does anyone know what all the insect traps up in the mountans are for ? (Apologies if this has been asked before)

There seems to be one about every 100 yds or so along the mountain road behind Esentepe, hundreds of them; each one has several black funnels with a white cylinder at the bottom, hanging from a wooden post.

I looked in one, which had caught tiny black ant-like insects in the cylinder. There were some crystals in a bag at the top, presumably to attract the insects.

Any ideas anyone ?

No, these were just on wooden posts. I've also seen them on palm trees around Girne. Perhaps the same device to catch different insects.

RE msg 3, gquick > Perhaps the same device to catch different insects. <

=> Maybe so. I remember from a couple of years ago that the mayor of Girne supported the purchase of palms (from Egypt). As usual: big stories in the news papers. But, alas. Most palms were planted in the wrong places, didn't get water when they needed it - and had bugs (although, of course, when bought "they were free of bugs - guaranteed"...).

Insect traps were supposed to be "the solution". The Girne mayor really is a funny man.

They are there to catch some beetle or other that do damage to pine trees.
