We bought a tree last year,

put it in a south facing spot,

it has been doing well for 5 months.

But now it seems to be dying from the bottom up.

Don't think we've been watering it too much, but not sure.

Any one got any ideas out there, don't want to wait till it's too late.

It's some type of fir tree.

Also there seems to be 3 trees growing at once,

was like that when we bought it.

Height 42 inches tall. from earth.

Will try to post a link....

Hi Graham,

We were hoping to leave it till later in the year,

before trying to move it, due to dry conditions.

Was OK last month, but with the heat now,

1st thing to do is move it.

hi navek take the plant out of the pot and check thr roots, if they are nice and white the plant should be ok. as graham has said the plant is in to small a pot and with the slopeing sides it will just funnel the water straight to the roots. obtain a larger pot, and tease out the root ball, and put in some drainage then re plant the tree

and water sparingly.

Hi Navek, from the picture this plant looks very similar to one I have .If it's the same, mine's in a very large pot it's aprox 1 .20m high and I"m told should be planted in the ground as they grow very tall!!! Sorry I don't know the name tho', it was bought from Tolga's in Karsiyaka.Might be worth a look there to see if they have any .As my friend said might look nice at Xmas with a few lights strung around it!

The English lady who works at Botanica furniture will tell you what type it is, can't remember her name but I believe she writes a gardening column in one of the propery mags.

If it's dying from the bottom up, it could well be Spider Mite, or Red Spider Mite.

We have some Cypress trees in tubs being killed by the little blighters. Almost impossible to get rid of. They suck the sap out of trees and have 5 life cycles a year, breeding like the proverbial!

Try 'googling' spider mite & fir trees for more info.

You can check if it is Spider Mite by holding a clean sheet of paper under the dying branches and give the tree a good shaking. The little Spider Mites will be seen on the paper scurrying around, squash them and they will appear quite 'bloody'.

If it is them, and you find out how to get rid of them,...

Let me know!

hi Navek, Your tree is a Norfolk Island pine, the type of stress that your tree is feeling is not unusual for a pot grown tree. The Norfolk Island pine would, in it's natural habitat, be a large tree, you are attempting to miniturize ( bonsai ), root trimming to restrict top growth is needed for this to be successful together with very selective feeding
