If I was you I'd get a very big, thick, heavy hardback - any title will do - drop it on tarantulas etc then stand on it to hold em down! For snakes you need a sweeping brush & a lump hammer - hold the snake down with the brush & wallop with hammer! Sorry laptagal I know that's not the answer you wanted but couldn't resist - I adore living here but I really wish the wildlife would stay in the wild & keep out of my house!!! There's a good website I think it's called http://www.whatsthatbug.com which has pictures of various spiders etc - hope that helps. Maggie

Good posting Nige, Could you possibly have a look at why the photo's for the chameleon and praying mantis don't come up? - The URL's are ok, I think it must be the BB code surrounding the URL's. Thanks, Keith.

Hi Laptagal we have an excellent book called Complete Mediterranean Widlife by Paul Sterry, plublished by Collins and it seems to have most creatures, plants etc. You can get it online at Amazon, or WHSmith.

Thank you all for the help. Will definetly get the book. We had a snake in the garden when we were last out and I think it was a coin snake but would be great to know for sure. Don't think I could bring myself to harm them but as there is an old neglected lemon grove next to the house, I expect many more visitors.
