Our house should be complete in May.

Would be grateful for some advice on the mains water supply.

Can you drink it from the tap?

Or do people filter it first or simply drink only bottled water?

And, if you buy water to fill a tank - is this drinkable?

Thanks in advance.

Can you drink it from the tap? YES BUT NOT ADVISABLE

Or do people filter it first or simply drink only bottled water? PEOPLE HAVE BOTTLED WATER FOR DRINKING. YOU CAN BUY DISPENSERS FOR AROUND £90 AND 19 LITRE BOTTLES FOR 4YTL. FILTERS HAVEN'T REALLY CAUGHT ON HERE.

I live in Karsiyaka and wouldn't personally drink the mains water. The water here is very hard and it comes from the pipes into your holding tank and then sits there until you use it. If you wanted to drink it I guess you would have to make sure the tank was very clean all the time. As far as tanker water is concerned, I dread to think where it might come from so I would suggest that is even worse than mains.

The best and cheapest option is to buy a water dispenser that takes 19ltr bottles. These bottles are priced at around 3.5 to 4ytl depending on where you buy them and in Karsiyaka there is a company called Selvi Su that delivers the bottles to you and I think they are the same price as from the supermarket. In the summer we get through a bottle a week (2 of us).

We drink the mains water but we have a separate tap on the sink which comes straight from the mains in the kitchen. Water which is used via the tank I wouldn't personally drink (ok to clean teeth with though). Its ok to make tea/coffee with because you are boiling it.

As mentioned in earlier posts most people have a water dispenser which takes the 19ltr bottles. You'll find you need one of these in the summer anyway and the water is really cheap. Its advisable to buy two bottles then you'll never run out when its really hot and you are desperate for a cold drink.

As orangekazzie says water drunk straight from the mains supply is ok, otherwise I would not drink it because the water could have been held in your tank for ages particularly if you only visit your property once in a while.

Also please remember water is short in the TRNC and mains water should not be used to fill/top-up swimming pools, I have heard of people being caught doing this, it is easy to tell from your water meter if you have done this.

Any shop selling electrical goods will have the water dispensers.
