have just been told that a uk driving licence is only valid on an insurance claim if you are driving a hired car. if you own your own car your uk licence would make the insurance invalid. does anyone know if this is true?

When I first bought insurance for my car here, the agent (a solicitor) told me that I must get a TRNC driving licence within 3 months of moving here, as it would be illegal to carry on driving for longer than that on my UK licence.

He said that I was OK to drive, and insured in the meantime.

I would guess that if you pass the 3 month mark, then you are technically driving without a valid licence, and that your insurance would therefor be invalid - as it would be in the UK if driving without a valid licence.

We have a car in Cyprus and visit one month at a time, 3 -4 times a year. Surely they don't expect visitors such as us to get a TRNC licence?

If you're a visitor, you can drive for up to 3 months on your UK licence. It doesn't need to be a hire car. I bought my car within 6 weeks of moving here. If you stay for any longer, you will need a TRNC licence. (You would need to have applied for residency, but of course if you were here for longer than 3 months you would do that and not try and get round the residency rules, would you??!!)

Why knock the TRNC. All countries in the world have a similar exchange or "drive for a limited time on your original licence and then get one of ours" policy. And in any country, to drive without a valid licence invalidates your car insurance.

I don't know for sure, but if the rule is the same as the UK, the three months starts at the "date of last entry" (day trips to the south not counted!!)

In the UK a Stoke City footballer was arrested earlier this year for not having a valid licence and insurance

It turned out that as he had passed his driving test in Jamaica he had 12 months to obtain a British licence , a paper work exercise because he had no valid licence his insurance was void.It was probably a Port Vale supporter in the Police force that arrested him.

Seriously the same rules will probable apply in the TRNC his defence was that he was still a Jamaican citizen and his main home was there

Wanderer is correct. The player was Ricardo Fuller. The story is well documented on the Internet if you require anymore information. Just type his name and the word driving and you'll soon find the stories.

To obtain a licence you do need to show residency or a work permit. If you are a serial "In and Outer" you bypass the rules and your UK licence is valid, as the maximum time you can actually spend in the TRNC on one visa is 3 months. So the serial "In and Outers" make a mockery of the law again!

thanks for all your replies, so its ok to drive on your uk licence for 3 months then get a trnc licence which is fair enough.
