Is it right that the import tax on a vehicle is about 65% for a non european build and about 40% for a european build vehicle based on the current market value from glasses guide. does anyone know if it is the same for a commercial vehicle, something like a mitsubishi warrior. the reason I need to know is that I find the price of a vehicle in the north is very expensive. Also how much does it cost to register it there with a cypriot number plate and how much road tax would it cost.

swaddo, its a bloody mine field ! in addition to the duty, there is a $1200 admin charge if the engine size is under 2000cc and $3,500 if the engine size is above 2000cc. The paperwork would test the patience of a saint ! the reason the vehicles in the north are so expensive, is that they have all paid the duty - There is no way of dodging it i'm afraid. its 65% non European and 44% European. as far as i'm aware, all vehicles pay this duty. unless you've got a vehicle in the UK that would loose you a lot to sell, my advice would be to buy over here - whilst there are few deals to be had at the car dealers, there are quite often Ex patts returning to the UK eager to do a deal to get rid. Hope this helps...

I agree with properperson - don't bother importing a vehicle! We've got ourselves in a terrible pickle with importing a car that falls somewhere between being too old, too fast and not quite classic enough! The paperwork has been a total minefield. Swallow hard and buy a car here.
