Hi Vaughan and anyone else who may have a suggestion, got a 10 x 5 overflow pool, 3 years old, problem we are having is, on hoovering we find the dirt we are sucking up is coming back through the inlets, resulting in a very cloudy pool on completion. We have replaced the filter sand and checked the filtration spider, the sand level is correct as is the grade of sand, we have dismantled the multi-valve and found it perfect,,anyone spot what we might be missing here,,thinking of filling it in and having a rose garden,,regards tom

This is always a tough one to diagnose. When you say the sand level is correct as is the grade, could you describe how much of which grades you put in the filter?

thanks for the reply Vaughan, the filter was emptied from the original fill about 18months ago as the original sand was way too course, we re-filled it with a bag of (25klg) rough grit around the filter spider, then 3 bags of .40-.45 silica sand, the manufacturer recomends 75klg total, this seemed rather low in the filter, and indeed didnt really cure the problem, we then added another 25klg bag which brought the level upto the underside of the flow pipe in the filter housing, this seemed to do the trick, and was really upto the original sand level, however in the last couple of months the same problem has reared its head,,we checked the sand level in filter and it appears to be no different than when we filled it and very clean,,,no sign whatso ever of any lime build up in the filter or sand, and the sand flows very easily, as I said, checked the multi valve and nothing amiss there,,,,cheers Tom

Hi plumbob. 1. Get two testing kits and make sure that they both give identical readings. Borrow one from friend if necessary. 2. Clean sides and top sloping tile of your pool. Leave for 12 hours. 3. “Floc” your pool and balance tank. Turn off filter. 4. When everything has completely settled on the bottom, 12 – 24 hours later, vacuum both pool and balance tank to “waste”. 5. Backwash and rinse twice until pressure gauge needle is at or very near zero. Please check that your pressure gauge is working correctly. If the needle does not move, replace it. Only £5.00. 6. Have drain only open and waste for 1 minute. 7. Have inlet jets only open and waste for 1 minute. Items 5 and 6 will ensure that there is no dirty water/debris in these pipes. 8. Now your pool, balance tank, all pipe-work and filter should be totally clean. 9. Get tanker water delivered to top up pool and balance tank. Arrange this earlier if necessary. (Continued)

(Contination) 10. Now check your PH and chlorine and add chemicals as necessary. 11. Every 24 hours for 7 days, vacuum your pool as normal. As there will be very little or no dirt, you should discover that your inlet jets do not “plume” with dirty water. 12. Then for the next two weeks, vacuum as normal every other day. 13. After this, vacuum as required, but never let your pool get too dirty. Best of luck. Please let me know if you try this and your findings. Best regards PC

hi plumbob I had the same problem with my pool in the UK. It turned out to be the multiport rubber seal, it looked OK but as it was worn it bent when you changed the setting so everything was going back into the pool, if it was the sand filter you would have sand in the pool. so it has to be the multiport. good luck

I would certainly inspect the rubber seals in the Multiportvalve.

Best of luck. I forgot to mention that I took all advice given. I changed my sand, no long-term improvement. I changed my Multi-port valve, no improvement. Then I did what's written above.
