One of the residents where I work was lovingly looking after a kitten, but the last 2 weeks seems to have forgotten about it completely. The kitten is getting some food & drink from the other residents but no-one wants to take responsibilty for it. The owner of my workplace has asked one of the staff members to take the kitten to the beach & dump it. I've never really been a cat person but I would rather take it home then see that happen. It's an outdoor cat, which is how I would like it to stay as I'm allergic to cats. Can anyone tell me what I would need to get done to the kitten if I took it home ie treated for fleas, so it didnt have kittens etc.

As you can tell, I have no experience with cats whatsoever so would like advise before I take it home so that I know that I am going to be able to treat it as it should be treated. I have other family members that desperately want to look after it but like I say, none of us have ever had a cat before.

Any advise grately appreciated.

I have had cats for more years than I care to remember, but of course, as you say, this one is an outdoor cat and mine have always just come in and out as they pleased. Cats, in my humble opinion, are pretty easy to look after, once you have got them 'established'. My advice would be to take the kitten to the vets, have it treated for fleas and have it wormed. You don't say whether it's male or female, but either way, I would have it 'done' when it's old enough. They tend to be pretty independent but can also prove to be good company (if that's what you want). Our 2 are pretty elderly now, but one of them, when younger, was a real hunting cat and would go off for days (we lived in the country at the time). He always came home.

I wish to you luck if you do decide to keep him/her and honestly, they don't need a lot of looking after, just food, water and some t.l.c.

Kind regards.

Please, please get it neutered, whether it's male or female and don't worry about it being an outdoor cat. As Jean said they don't need too much looking after. I would recommend a flea/ticks treatment every month but in my experience it's the ticks that are more of a nuisance in Cyprus than fleas. If you need help getting the cat neutered please contact KAR. They took two cats to the vets for us in return for a donation and they were returned the next day.

Hi. Thanks for the advise. Unfortunately the kitten disappeared the day you sent the replies & has not been seen since. I have been told that it wasnt taken to the beach & the gardeners at work are keeping an eye out for her & will let me know if she is seen. It's been over a week now though so I'm hoping that someone else took pity on her & has given her a home.

I went out & bought some bowls, a collar & some food that day though so I might think about given another kitten a home soon.

Thanks again for your advise.

chrisieh1,

Would you consider one (or both) of these two little darlings?

They are the two tiny kittens that were left on Lillie's doorstep - now safely tucked up on the balcony at Guido's Bistro.

Believed to be one boy and one girl, but no guarantees!

As you may know, Lillie and Guido have dogs, so it's out of the question for them to keep the kittens - really it's a miracle that the 'Staffy' left them alone...If you can offer one (or both!) of these kittens a home, you can contact Guido's on this board, or ring 0533 833 6911 or email: guidoandliz@yahoo.co.uk , website is http://www.guidosbistro.com/index.php

Keith.
