My mother in law has a few medical issues which require regular checks and medication. When she moves out in september I am coming with her for a couple of weeks to help her settle and one of the jobs to do is to find her a doctor before I leave.

Initially she will be staying in the Catalkoy area but will move to Tatlisu when property is completed.

Can anybody recommend a doctor and advise what you need to do. I know it's not like to the uk where you are registered at a surgery.

best to use the clinic - they have several specialist doctors there...

Past Pia Bella on the left, turn left past Molly's bar, then immediatly right - the medical centre is 25yds on the left.....

Do you just go in or make an appointment? should she go and get a "MOT" when she gets there so they have a medical history for her already should any problems crop up?

She takes quite a bit of medication and from experience if she changes any she usually has some reaction. I've suggested she gets a few months supply from uk docs so there is a gentle transition

She will be very lucky to get a few months supply from the UK doc unless they break the law. I asked my GP last week if I were to take 3months holiday in Turkey would he give me a prescription, he said he would do that just once as there is a law against it, he normally only gives a prescription for 1 month at a time.

Hi Pugsey,

I agree with Woodspeckie, I normally get 2 months prescription at a time but my GP will not give me any more than this. You can however buy most medication at the pharmacy without prescription. Just take your empty box along. As your mother in law is going to be in Tatlisu when her property is finished, why don't you try the clinic in Esentepe? The doctor there speaks excellent English.

The doctor in Esentepe is really nice and very helpful. Your G.P. CAN give 3 months supply but a lot of them don't like to because of costs to them!!!! If you explain the situation that it may take some time to get settled and find a doctor I'm sure your G.P. will understand - ours did. A word of advice, bring the copy of the repeat prescriptions and any "one off" meds as this makes life a lot easier when you go to register and if the doctor here suggests blood tests get to Girne hospital early before the bun fight starts! They will take the blood (very efficient and don't leave bruises) and you get the results around midday but they're usually ready by about 11.30am the same day. Each consultation with the doctor in Esentepe costs 7.5tl and he does have a pretty well stocked pharmacy on site. If he doesn't stock it he will give a "prescription" which the local pharmacy will provide. You pay the cost of the drug - much cheaper than UK and they give you the script back!

Hi Pugs I went to my GP last week in UK and even though Im old and my perscrptions are free as they all are now in wales he couldnt give me 2 months worth but he told me they can give a copy of your medical files to take abroad to present to new doctor. Drugs here are less than percription charges except crestor. I pay 26 euro a month for these but if it saves your life then what price xxxxx

Lilli

Thanks for the advice. I did wonder if we could get a copy of her medical history from UK docs. She is a walking medical cabinet god love her, but as you say money doesn't really come into it. Hopefully she will feel the benefits of a cypriot lifestyle. some things wont go away but I know she always feels better in herself when she's over there, as do I.

p.s how did you know my family call me Pugs for short???? Very spooky.

Hopefully Lilli you mean our very own Nurseawful? Honest Pugs she is nothing like her nick name. Very professional and a font of knowledge, and if she is not 100% sure she will find out and get back to you. Please trust me I am a nurse too and I still at times turn to Nurseawful for advice.

Boglefan,, again thanks. It is reassuring to know that there are places/people we can turn to if we need it.

Just as an after thought, should you need urgent medical attention what do you do over there? Is there any form of ambulance service, and if so how do you call it?

On our last visit in June my husband (mick) and I were admiring the lovely star lit night when his chair collapsed. Quite funny until I realised he had knocked himself out. It was only for a few seconds but I had no idea what to do next. All was well but I promised myself I had to be better prepared in the future.

Mind you ever since every time he's in danger of getting on my bad side he points to his head and claims he is still suffering the effects. Wearing a little thin 5 weeks on!!

Pugsey,

When you come out make sure your first stop is at the pharmacy to check that your mums medications are available, as some are quite difficult to get here. The one that springs to mind is Insulin so if mum is diabetic you really need to stock up as much as you can.

If you need any help just e-mail me.

Chris
