Was in Girne today and went to the DVD shop behind Lemar (next to Mugz coffee shop).... Asked the bloke how much the DVD's were (unlike everywhere else, there were no prices in the window or on the DVD boxes).... "5TL each or 4 for 15TL".... When i told him that the shop opposite Lemar are charging 10TL for 4 and the shop further towards Cattlekoy are charging 10TL for 5 - i got the "Cypriot shrug".... Anyway, you'll like this..... While i was talking to the shop owner, a Cypriot came up to the counter, handed 2 DVD's over, and counted out 5TL and handed the dosh over - the shop owner hurridly grabbed it, thinking i had not seen how much money he was paying. Need less to say, we will not be returning..... A Neg Nick VFM 0 / 10 A Neg Nick let's rip the Brits off, you know how daft they are - 10 / 10 - Well done..... You have been warned.......

That is par for the course here NN, it makes your blood boil. Do you or anyone else know what the DVD shop charges for their dvd's in Alsancak on the right hand side coming from Lapta where the hut money exchange is and Taj Mahal. Just curious?

There's a good DVD shop in Girne. Leave the Jasmine Court on your left, head towards Girne. First roundabout and the DVD shop is on your left. It's only a small entrance but the shop stretches right back. Huge collection - and the guy's very helpful.

I have had so many terrible copies from the small DVD shop on the roundabout that we dont go there any more, they will always change them for you if you take them back but its a pain when you are just sitting down for the evening to watch a film, and its either the wrong film, or just unwatchable. I agree that the DVD shop in Alsancak is good, they are usually very good copies, but Sally will always tell you if it its not great and they do offer a discount if you take back ones that you have watched.

NN, No different to me paying 250 TL to pay tennis for the year at the Belediye courts and the Cypriots paying 100TL! I questioned the charges and was told that if I didn't want to play that was my choice and I was also told by the chap in charge that he did not give a s**t whether I joined or not!!

NegNick, Are you sure the turk wasn't swapping his DVDs?? Usually you pay more when you first get your films but they let you swap them as many times as you like for a margin of the cost. If thats the case, then no dodgy business going on here!! Most places will charge you up to 5tl when you 1st buy a DVD and up to 3tl to swap them...

What a complaint! Here I am buying dodgy but nevertheless illegal copies of films and I have the nerve to complain that I am being "ripped off" because I am getting them around £10.00 cheaper for each one, than if I bought the proper and legal copy!!! Must take a good look at the forged bank notes as well as I think I am being "ripped off" by paying 5TL for every 50TL one I buy! And that damn Rolex I paid 20TL for 3 years ago needs a new battery now - what next? Come on people, there is more to life than this surely?

waddo Absolutely spot on, whingeing Brits again. I do not care what others are paying. My attitude is that if I think I am getting good value for my money on a purchase then I am happy. If others manage to get the same goods for less then good luck to them. I does not wind me up and I do not spend all of my time trying to get the cheapest price for everything or worrying about what others are paying. Life is too short. AJ

Message 1 ..Was in Girne today and went to the DVD shop behind Lemar (next to Mugz coffee shop).... Are they the same owners as Mugz .. Went to Mugz earlier this year, was given 4 menus .. Ordered coffees toasties etc .. When we got the bill it was almost twice the prices shown on my menu .. When I questioned it was told it was an old menu & had not been amended .. They obviously have 2 menus .. 1 for the locals .. 1 for tourists & got the two mixed .. Not been back since ..

never thought i would stoop to moan about petty things like this but i'll certainly not be going to that dvd shop again either as he got me fuming 2 days ago...have used it loads since it opened and usually buy 8 at a time...my wife is cypriot and we watch dvds together but she needs the subtitles to watch as she doesnt understand when dialogue is quick/slang/simultaneous etc and when i went with her to change 3 of them (2 cos they were just in english with no subtitles and 1 had the subtitles 10 secs before they spoke) the idiot said no cos i might have watched them without her...we originally asked for replacements of the same films. what a twat. i got dvd rage and not felt so angry for ages due to him trying to have me over. hes just lost one of his best customers and he doesnt even care. no idea if associated with mugz but if they are then i wont be going there again either (although never had problem with mugz at all). looks like i'm an official griper now. god help me!

Wonderful people the Brits!! The way we backed the Turks and fought for their rights pre74. Absolutely brilliant!! And all the help we have given them since - breathtaking! I'm sure they all appreciate how lucky they are to have such magnificent people visiting their island and spending all their money just to stimulate the TRNC economy. And to be ripped off is just disgraceful!! It's the governments fault!! Lets get up a petition!!!!! I'm coming over next week and pray that I run into some of you benevolent people - hopefully in a four wheel drive.

Guys who doesnt rip off one another? We cant live without it. There is a freedom of choice in this country. Particularly in this case DVD's the freedom we have here with DVDs are amazing the competition is on. I remeber times where there where only 2 DVD shops in Kyrenia. SOK music and another. The point is people the economy here is not just an English oriented economy it is now a Turkish Cypriot Economy. We are in the TRNC for f*** sake. Let it boom. Let DVD shops compete. The guy across Lemar ok he is selling 4 dvds for 10TL but it doesnt even look like a dvd shop in there its more like a car boot sale and the covers are black and white, clearly the only difference between the two of them is presentation. If you want more presentation you have to pay for it. Be it a DVD be it a House. Its a free country. And the Turks here fought for that back in 74. Not for english people not for greeks but for their own country. They rule it the way they like to. You dont like it buy a ticket.

I dont believe Negative Nick is really slagging off Cyprus as a whole, I do believe he enjoys his life here. Unfortunately the problem is worldwide, how many horror stories do you hear of tourists getting ripped of in London , New York etc. The foreigner is always the sucker or mug punter throughout the whole world. Thank you NN for bringing this business to the attention of the forum for their two tier pricing system. yes its now up to everyone to decide themselves if they want to buy DVDs from there . Why not everyone share their experiences about the two tier pricing system here or anywhere. Enjoy the Life

mess 28 - once you've watched the movie it's scap - or do you parade your boxes with pride on a shelf in the living room, like the Monger's do ? If you read the message, it is about the principle - do shop around / haggle when you buy things over here ?

What are the two main factors governing the TRNC economy, 1. tourism 2. Construction So I seriously believe the Brits are very important to the TRNC economy on these two factors alone. So yes shout loudly when you get ripped off, bouycot the businesses, name and shame. Yes the expat community is very important to the TRNC economy
