Hi there Zerochlor, I don't think the figure you quoted is a lot with the rate of exchange as it is. Did you think it is expensive? I suppose if you are looking at it from the viewpoint of a turkish cypriot....what would their general yearly earnings be? Mixie

hi kezspot I am currently divorcing in the UK and understand I have to be divorced here too. There is property involved here as well and the solicitor told me it would cost roughly £5000-£6,000 so what solicitor did you use.

600quid for a divorce! bargain! joke- why do they name hurricanes after women? for example- hurricane sue or hurricane diane? its because when theyre coming theyre wild and wet and when they leave, they take the house, the car,the kids and everything else with them.

Hi All If you get divorced here you ARE recognised as being divorced in the UK.. I know this for a fact. First hand knowledge, someone I know got divorced here and is getting re-married in September. It has been checked and verified in the UK and it is all legally binding. Forget the rumours, you only get divorced once ( from that marriage before anyone comments) regardless of which country it happens to be in! If in any doubt check with the UK and they will tell you the same!

re msg 12 Having a " bad day" yorgozlu ? ;) Thanks for the update HR... When I got divorced I was informed that I could get divorced under the law of any EU state I chose...once started it would take the agreement of both parties to change that.. Now back then under RoC law ... you could take out the assets you started with.. If I'd done that it would have been the ex-Missus that was "homeless" .. :D Yorgozlu.... With any luck, AJ will come on soon and tell you to " get a grip ".... ;)

Here we go, hate this subject really........ but my divorce (to a TC) set me back £3,000. Was married in the UK but divorced here. There were properties involved. My solicitor actually refunded me £1,000 at the end of it. Now thats got to be unhead of here !!!!!! A first maybe ???? Remarried, and the divorce documents had to be shown at the British Embassy in Turkey, where they were accepted as the norm. Bands were read, no problems. Wish it could have cost me £600 though.

reply to message 9 - I actually thought I wasn't married officially too in uk, as got married here, but when I went to change my passport surname in uk, north cyprus is recognised with them as well as various other things in uk my marriage certificate was valid. reply to message 13 - I used Izzey solicitor, he is based opposite the courts, there is a small road that leads to a little carpark. In the carpark infront of you is a sign for the solicitors, think it is second floor. Izzey was great, all sorted within a week, unfortunately you both have to go to court and agree to everything to make it cheaper and easy. You can both use izzey as your solicitor, he is very understanding and helpful. Good luck x

Where shall I start? Costs? Well it can vary from one advocate to another and a lot depends on the complexity of the case. If both sides agree on the terms, one side starts the proceedings and the other side comes to court and receives the papers and also attends the court and accepts what was written. That is the easiest and should cost a minimum but it still depends on the lawyer and in such a case it may be worth to shop around. If the other side does not agree to everything, it may be a prolonged case and the costs should go up accordingly. Howevr you may agree with your lawyer to give them an initial payment and everything else to be charged in accordance with the official rate. The court registrar can check the figures for you before you pay. Areas of conflict: 1. One side does not want a divorce. Under the present law a divorce is inevitable but can be prolonged. 2. Distribution of wealth accumulated during marriage. Each side gets one third and the remaining third

ctd. the remaining third distributed at the discretion of the court. 3. Small children are normally left to the control of the mother unless there are good reasons to give them to the father. Also the arrangement for father to see the children and money for the children are other areas of conflict. Most countries recognize marriage and divorce in other countries but some countries like Turkey insist that it is in their jurisdiction only. So any marriages or divorce outside Turkey must be registered with the authorites of Turkey in order to be recognized. This is not the cas with UK. ismet

The divorce laws here DO stand in UK. The UK accepts the divorce paperwork provided it also has an English translation stamped by the Court. If you are British, and getting a divorce, the TRNC Court will insist on you having a translator in Court as well as giving you translated paperwork. Now, I'm off to see about divorce number 4...
