I had 6 boxes, a kayak and a mountain bike shipped home. Upon delivery (which took 8 weeks instead of 1) I was told the bike had been stolen by someone when he left the door of the van open. He said he would try to get me a bike from someone down the pub!!!! I said no. I have now discovered that my camcorder and SLR camera with 300mm lens are missing. Total value approx £2000. He says hes not insured for such loss and knows nothing. The guy who did the shipping is a 'nice' old fella with a van, Cypriot, living on the north coast and delivers to the UK regularly. Be warned!

All thieves are nice, it's how they make a living! If you have valuables then keep them with you, or use a company that will do an inventory or the same if you use a 'man with a van'. Even better make sure that there is some insurance either provided by the company or organise your own. When we moved to the TRNC a box of Stourbridge Crystal disappeared. Luckily we were insured and the inventory was very specific. In the end the Insurance Company paid out but, of course, there was the usual negotiating with them. Let this be a lesson to you Donty and others who decide to trust their valuables to someone because he's cheaper than the others.

I have no doubt that as is often the case in NC , your dealings started with a smile and ended with a shrug ?

Oh thank you for pointing out the Lesson Timothy. I posted to warn people of this guy. He came recommended from a friend who used his services so I didnt feel the need to worry unduly. TimothyCadman. The "a lesson to you" bit makes you sound like a smug git. No one likes a smug git, smart alec.

Then name him!! There are many 'man-with-a-van' in North Cyprus. Unless you name him then someone else will also fall. And no I'm not a "smug git" just a street wise person that you obviously are not. This is a dangerous world we live in and if someone can see a weakness in someone it will be used to their own advantage. Take NO ONE at their word. Always ensure that you do your own research. Find your own evidence to support your arguments. When I bought a house a in North Cyprus I was being pushed very hard by Unwins to buy at Amaranta Valley, but after doing my own research on the builder I backed off very quick. I also backed off from another deal with Korinia Estate Agents when I found out why they pushed so hard to sell one particular property....the builder was married into the family! So from now on be cautious even with friends. Friends mean well but for all you know they may well have been in on the sting too!

If you think your posting was useful, you are wrong. You are a smug git. my evidence is here : "Let this be a lesson to you Donty" Do i need a smart alec pointing the obvious out? Not really. Ive been robbed but will not be taking this lying down cos i dont like getting mugged off. As i said, he was recommended by a GOOD friend who had no problems with his own delivery so stick ur 'after the event' smart alec advice away. I dont know any other older cyp dudes living on the north coast who take luggage back for people in a transit. If any1 wants his name email me.

We used Olaytrans. Couldn't fault them. Didn't even want any money off us until they had delivered the furniture to our house. I believe they do shipping from here to the UK at a reasonable price.

No doubt, Racoonchic, lazydays and Brinsley you too are also "Smart Alecs" and no doubt you will be told that you are too!! Donty, I really hope that you follow through with reports to the Police in the UK and the TRNC and that you inform the TRNC authorities and UK authorities to see if this man is a registered company and he has all the documentation to trade and that includes up to date insurance, through which you can make a claim. As long as you have a written inventory and signed by him, or someone on behalg of his company, then the insurance claim should be pretty straight forward. Of course, should this just be something he is doing on the side you may well need to goto small claims court in the UK or through the court system in the TRNC. Good luck with your persistance.

Not sure what the point of DONTY posting is about. He/She supposedly has been 'stung' so name the pr*ck and warn others about this particular unsavoury character. Otherwise, repair back to the Sunday Star and write about how housewife fell in love with cabbage landed from Mars! Richard

Well.well.well,and here I am thinking TRNC is the best place in the world to live, well I have been told often enough,no crime rate, you dont get ripped off, and the people are SOOOO friendly.Strikes me as though it is no different from the old nasty UK,where you get caught every time you step out of the front door.Put it down to a learning experience Donty, and remember one thing,Turks/Turkish Cypriots are no different to the Del Boys in the East End.....Make a quick buck and scarper...
