Should the parents of children who don’t go to school be punished? Truancy is a problem for every country with compulsory schooling. All children have a right to education. Should the state make sure that their parents keep them in school ,even if the child does not want to go to school? Or is there an argument that If a child chooses to miss school, it is the child, not the parent who is at fault. Usually the parents want them to go to school, so is it wrong to punish the person who hasn’t done anything?

Bring back the strap and cane for teachers to use at their discretion. Enough of the nanny state and PC idiots. Richard

i think its the parents responsability to make sure their child goes to school, education is the best tool you can give them in life ,if they skip school theres a problem somewhere, ie bullying , unhappy home life ,etc, parents need to guide them , in scotland if my son isnt at registration at 8.50 i get a text from his school asking why he isnt theyre , and thats at 9am, no need for it these days theyve got it all , but im only talking for the uk education system , which in my opinion is the best in the world.

I think both are to blame, Parents need to be punished if there child(ren) do not attend school, but schools likewise need to have more authority to keep them their as parents cannot sit with them every lesson. I agree with what Brinsley says.

Would be a good idea to DNA all parties involved to clarify the errant child who he/she purports to be in the gene blood line. Many an unsuspecting 'Father' may get off the hook from their parental responsibilities on that one! Richard

No 1 message 3 - I was caned and it never did me any harm! Except a sore backside LOL Being serious now, my youngest truented frequently. I took him to school and he didnt stay there. In the end, I took him to school, went into the school with him and sat at the back of the class in lessons to show him up. This went on for 2 weeks and he was a laughing stock with his mates with his mum being at the back of the class (with the head's permission). I even went to the cafe with him at lunchtime. How embarassing for him and me too (I had to give up 2 weeks annual leave for that!) It worked. He knucked down. He is now a Police Officer! LOL

My son has recently started a new school, which he is doing well at... He decided a few weeks back that he was going to bunk off on sports day, got caught (haha...it was his 1st time bunking).... I received a phone call from the school and he got an hours detention, of which i had to sign some paperwork to say i agreed for the detention.....He was also grounded at home and not allowed to use the pc for a week (apart from homework)... We have officers patrolling in the town, and if a child is out of school , they are taken straight back and parents are called.... Most children may bunk off at some time or the other, but with the co-operation between the school and parents, things should get sorted.....hopefully My son took it all in his stride (teenage hormones going hay wire)...he soon got worried, when i told him he had to ring his father and tell him what he had done, should have seen his face......that was punishment enough . Hopefully we wont get a repeat performa
