I need some help! I am in England and cannot find one set of keys to my apartment. We have a potential buyer for it who wants to look around. My parents are in Cyprus at the moment. We changed the locks a couple of years ago so my builder hasn't got a key. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Maria, I suggest that your parents go and see Sahin (locksmith) in tin pan alley (bit further up than Imap and on the opposite side). He will go out and remove the old lock (no key needed!) and refit with new lock. Have used him at several properties - knows his stuff and has always been quick and fair.

Just go to any keysmith. They have battery operated jigs that fit into any lock and open it painlessly. Its a sort of vibrating rods pushing up all the right bits and opens the lock in a second. ismet

Hi Ozbey, Thankyou so much. Do you have any idea what he will charge? Also, will it be a problem that we're not there? I don't want my mum and dad getting into any trouble with the police lol.

Thankyou Izmet, Do you know a locksmith that offers this service and will he be able to make another key without changing the locks? (probably a stupid question, but i know nothing about these things!) Maria

I haven't needed his services for a couple of years now, but from memory it was between £20-40 sterling depending on the quality of the new lock you choose, probably dearer by now.

First of all your question about the police puzzled me. Why should your parents be in trouble if they have lost the keys and they get a locksmith to open the door? Therre must be more to it if you asked this question. So I will refrain from answering that one before I know more about it. In my case it cost me nothing because I picked up the locksmith from his shop, took him in my car to my office, opened the door, offered him coffee and took him back. He would not charge for such a small service, Cypriot style. This one is in Famagusta. Presumably yhe apartment in question is in Kyrenia or anywhere in Cyprus for that matter. I suggest your parents find a locksmith near the apartment and oversee the operation. No locksmith should open any door without the owners being present. That is fair enough. It is cheaper to change the lock rather than have new keys made. A new lock has 3 keys which equals the cost of two new keys made!!! ismet PS: I could reach C44 only through a proxy server, so have to put up with the adverts!!!

Elko2 I was just a bit concerned that as they are not the owners of the apartment they could get in trouble.. Ha ha i can assure you there isn't anything else to it! I will telephone them now and tell them what you said, thankyou very much for your kind advice. Maria
