See extract below from Prime Ministers web site.

9. Bringing your items to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

For Foreign Visitors;

Ø You can bring cars not older than 5 years into TRNC or if you are the owner of the car for the last five years. (Each Foreigner has the right to use a duty free car not exceeding 1 year).

For Foreigners who would like to settle in TRNC;

Ø You can bring cars not older than 3 years. (Each Foreigner has the right to use a duty free car not exceeding 1 year).

If your car is coming from Europe you’ll pay 40.04% of the value of the car in tax, if your car is of non-European origin then you’ll be charged 65.12%. On all cars you will pay an additional USD1200 for cars under 1600cc, USD3000 for cars between 1600cc and 2000cc and then USD3600 for cars with an engine capacity over 2000cc.

Hello all and thanks for the links although I am feeling a little thick here.

As i understand it now, you can bring in a car no older than 5 years which mine would be, drive it for a year then pay an astouding 40% tax on the value.

However I'm confused by Paul90 link and the 3 year rule.

We are planning to live there so does my car need to be under 3 in that case?

It is looking like a better idea to just buy one out there given all the other taxes.

thanks

Personally I think the best thing to do is bring a copy of your log book next time you are here and take it customs in Lefkosa and get a definitive answer.

Hi Paul90 and UkTurk

I have looked through all the forums relating car importing and still not clear about the below extract from Paul90's comment.

----------------------------------

9. Bringing your items to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

For Foreign Visitors;

Ø You can bring cars not older than 5 years into TRNC or if you are the owner of the car for the last five years. (Each Foreigner has the right to use a duty free car not exceeding 1 year).

---------------------------------

Does Foreign visitor mean that they are only visiting and will not be resident in NC? And if only visiting why do they need to pat duty anyway?

If one is emigrating back after more than 10 years and were the owner of a vehicle which is more than 5 year old, can the vehicle be brought in with no duty ?

Hope someone can answer this for me.

Thanks

Biker

Hi Biker - in your specific case have a look at the link below - I have copied some of the information also.

I do not know if it will help.

http://www.trnc.info/viewtopic.php?p=1333

Latest information on importing cars The following information was supplied by the Office of the London Representative Turkish Republic Northern Cyprus 19.12.2006 The Customs Act concerning the importation of vehicles into TRNC is as follows: 1. Motor Vehicles: For cars imported to the TRNC there is still a three-year age limitation. However, it is not applied to those persons of Cypriot origin and of 18 years of age who have been away from the country for 10 years and proves that they have re-migrated for permanent residence (the university and college graduations are not taken into consideration) and, to those persons of non-Cypriot origin and of 18 years of age who have re-migrated for permanent residence and proves it with official documents and whose income is completely coming from foreign countries and has no connection whatsoever with a government duty. However, a reduction over the taxes of imported vehicles is applied. Motor Vehicles Turkey Origin EU-EFTA Origin Third Country 1600cc $1200 +% 31.88 $1200+%42.68 $1200+%67.76 (including 1600cc) 1600cc – 2000cc $3000+% 31.88 $3000+%42.68 $3000+%67.76 (including 2000cc) Those over 2000cc $3600+%31.88 $3600+%42.68 $3600+%67.76 In case a foreign student is the TRNC envisages bringing his/her car to the country, the car has to go through the following procedures on entering the country. 1. The car must be registered in the name of the student. 2. The student must keep his/her identity card and registration documents of his/her car with him on entering the TRNC. 3. The student must have obtained residence permit or pending to obtain it within 10 days upon arrival. 4. The student shall be issued a temporary entry document by the police upon entering the TRNC and the student shall be asked to appear in person at the Nicosia Customs and Tax Department to complete the necessary procedures for the car (traffic licence, insurance etc.). Upon completing these requirements, the student will be exempt from paying customs duties for the car until the completion of his/her studies.

folks i have spoken to the embassy myself on thursday the 24/04/08 and had this from the horses mouth as it were.

The rule is a 3 year old car to bring over however and its a big however if you are merley visiting and not a planning on emigratting then you can enter TRNC for six months. This our plan to drive there on the 29th of May and leave the car with us for six months hence not incurring the 40% import.

Personally if you reside in the UK the staff at the embassy are helpful so it may be worth a phone call there number is 02076311920.

Hope this is somewhat clearer.

We have been told so many different accounts so we are no furnished with the right information

I wonder if it is possible to inport a car into TRNC for say twelve months then take the car to Turkey for a couple of weeks then drive it back and then claim another year or take it to Turkey leave it at say Dalaman catch a flight back home a couple of months time fly into Dalaman pick up your car and drive back to Cyprus and claim a new year . It might be possible there is a lot of mainland Turks that drive there cars over . I also wonder if it is possible to drive a U/K reg car through the border to the Greek dark side of the island . Two questions i wonder if i will get an answer ?.

Hi Breezyboy, its possible to do that, however make sure the vehicle is registered in a name who is not resident in the north as they can take the vehicle from you, ie if its in your name and you have a residency stamp in your passport, get your mate in the south to put it in his name and get writen permission from him to drive, his name as primary on the insurance with you as a named driver in the south. Insurance companies over here will insure the vehicle or just get it from the border as theres not alot of difference in price, Ive had no probs for the last three years.

Hi all, we are planning on driving over in July and staying for a year. Our car is 4 years old. If we have to leave after this time, can I take the car to mainland Turkey, register it there, then come back with the car on Turkish plates???. Hope someone can give a proper answer to this big problem. Thanks Ian.

hi ian

welcome to the forum

you can bring a car into turkey and will be allowed to have it in the country for a max of 6 months, but if you plan to register it in turkey you will have to be first a resident then you will have to pay 40% tax on the price of the car, so it wont be really worth it

and you cant take the car out of cyprus and bring the car into turkey then try to bring the car back into cyprus because it gets registerd with your passport and they will see you have already bought the car in once before

sorry to be the bearer of bad news and i am 100% sure on this because i help many expats in registering their cars when they are in turkey

regards

The answer to your LH drive question is no.

The import of all LH cars was barred as from 1st January.

ianj774,

First question is have you owned car from new. If not and it is 4 years old you cannot import to TRNC. If you have owned from new you can import.

If you leave TRNC and were able to register in Turkey the same laws as above would apply ie you cannot import back to TRNC.

Personal view - why subject yourself to all the taxes etc unless you have a car that you particularly value and would serve a useful purpose here.

Also do not forget all these laws etc can be changed without notice so what may be shown here may not be valid when or if you decide to bring a vehicle.

The authorities also value according to Glasses Guide but are prone to use whatever they wish. A friend bought a very cheap 4x4 in UK, imported and found the taxes that were to be paid were a lot more than was paid for the vehicle. Option - pay taxes or shipping back to UK to try to get some cash back.

and what cyprusishome is saying is spot on about importing cars from turkey this loop hole closed because of the pure fact people were going over to turkey and buying cars and then importing them into cyprus and registering them with a cypriot plate because the extra tax you had to pay was very small thats why you see quite a few left hand drive cars with cypriot number plates

and like cyprusishome is asying there is no point in bringing a car from abroad to register it unless in has some sort of sentimental value and money is no object to you to do this
