We bought a villa In Bellapais that's about 20 years old now. The toilets are not flushing properly any more and we have been told by a local friend that toilet tissue is causing a blockage. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem and what was done about it?

Lift up the manhole covers and have a look. Most of the time you can sort this yourself with a big stick or pipe.

Contact Cyprus Solutions on 0533 836 7094. They will not only unblock your drains, they can reform your system so that future blockages are avoided. This does not cost a lot of money.

Neemey, You probably have an older system and in the past on islands in the Med. you had a bin next to the toilet for tissue. You might do yourself a good service when the problem is sorted to start using one again nad ask all visitors etc to do so too. The waste disposal is not well equiped for tissue and many other man made solids sanitary or otherwise.

| For a quick simple way to unblock a toilet....take a mop and tie a plastic bag to the head, very tightly...then push the mop into the bowl and treat it like a plunger....if your toilet is blocked this method should unblock it...alternatively, you could make like a local and chuck a dead bird or rabbit in the bowl...apparently the bacteria released from dead animal should eat its way through the blockage...might be rather smelly though!! | Or even better, get ALL the builders to move into the 21st century and put in drainage that allows you to flush toilet paper. It's not rocket science and surely must be easier to fit modern preformed plastic inspection than have to keep making those sill concrete pits that stop the flow of the S*** along the pipe. The problem generally is not the size of the pipe, but these concrete pits. See here (in the south) http://www.draintechcyprus.com/ |

having lived in turkey for a few years i have got used to 'rinsing my bits' i see that the little water jets are in the toilet bowl but no one seems to connect them its very strange surely the less paper going down the pot will help this problem

Neemey 20 years without a problem? In NC? That rates as pretty good in my estimation.

I have spoken to John Webster about this in some detail and I have seen first hand the results after Cyprus Solutions have reformed the system. This is ideal for people who rent their villas out as you may be happy putting your used toilet paper in a bin but your UK guests may find this rather unpleasant and flush it anyway. Once your drains are reformed dead rabbits, etc., will become a thing of the past.
