Coachie, Spot on Sir, Just got back this afternoon from Corfu on a charter, 1 kg over for the 3 of us, not each. Had to pay 12 euros extra, but no read out on scales and not offered chance to take something out of case and transfer it to hand luggage, went out with same luggage and within limits...15 kgs. Also Sardines are comfortable in comparison !!!

On a recent trip to Egypt my bathroom scales said we had 18kgs of luggage, the airport said 21kgs.

With no extras bought in Egypt, and returning with exactly the same luggage our weight was 17kgs.

That's when I became convinced that UK Airport scales are rigged in favour of the airlines. Of course you are unable to argue the toss with them at check-in as they hold all the aces. "Pay up or don't fly!" is their attitude. They get their wages if you fly or you don't.

We pay extra £15 for 5kg with Thomas Cook making 20kg. In Sept mine was 23kg husbands 22kg they didn't charge us extra. We have found by talking to other people who only have the 15kg they have had to pay the extra but the ones who have paid the extra for 20kg have never paid any extra. Seems they target the ones not not paying for the extra allowance. Also our hand luggage we take the cabin size cases both weighed 9kg they were never checked, they just glanced at them when they asked if we had hand luggage.

TC leg room is awful. If you can book extra leg room. It's worth it if you're over five feet tall.

So who do you fly with UK<>KKTC which is fairly cheap, and has no rip offs such as paying extra for some baggage and for a meal??

Agree with Coachie - Talk about tight, they're water tight. Even if you're slightly over on your baggage allowance they charge. Wouldn't recommend them if you can find an alternative. We did a sneaky and packed our hand baggage with as much as we could and just kept it on our shoulders as if it weighed a couple of pounds instead of kilos!

We have flown back to UK with both Thomas Cook and Monarch. Of the two, I would go with Monarch everytime due to the extra legroom. However, just a point on the baggage allowance - it is exactly that, an allowance and if you are over then you pay extra. The simple answer is make sure that you are under the figure allowed. In the end an airline is a business and they will have worked out all the costs of moving an individual with x amount of luggage, factored in a % of profit and priced the ticket accordingly - excess baggage hits their profit. A restaurant owner isn't going to charge you £10 for a steak and then throw in a couple of pork chops as well !!

In this world you don't get owt for nowt as my dad used to say !!

Regards

Paul

You check in your luggage 15kg or 20 kg, go through duty free and in the shops there you can buy as many kg of clothes you want to and take them on board free of charge whats the difference.

It's a few years since I flew Thos Cook to Larnaca, The hold luggage was 20kg. 15kg plus 5gbp for extra 5kg. If you only needed 15kg they knocked 5gbp off. Same with the inflight meal. It was included but they knocked 5gbp off if you didn't want it. You couldn't change your mind on the plane. I thought TC were OK, bit pricey with the drinks though.

I`ve just been on the Thomas Cook website looking for flights from Glasgow, for the end of Sept they are looking for £314 plus £16 per person for 20kg luggage, not cheap but that`s what you have to pay up here in SUNNY SCOTLAND

I always thought airlines charging extra for a kilo or two over the luggage allowance was nitpicking.

When you consider that the individual differences in the weight of passengers can be from say 40 odd kilos for a small woman up to the mid hundred kilo range for a say a large bloke this is a far greater weight and fuel drain than any excess baggage you could carry.

Quality airlines such as Emirates are usually pretty flexible if your baggage is a few kilos over anyway.

A quick update as to what transpired this morning at 6am. Luggage over by 4.8 kgs (24.8) and hand luggage was not weighed over by at least 3. No questions asked. No excess luggage payments. .. good so far ..

However, extra leg room seats were for sale at 34 Euros a seat ..... flight still on tarmac .. and expected to take off at 13.15. A delay of 6 hours (so far)

Last time the memsahib bought the kitchen sink with her MAN to ECN , KKTC charged about £10 per kilo over.

Luckily eveything is in TRNC now so only need a small cabin bag.
