When you make a mistake on one of these cheques you must return the cheque to the bank for them to see and cancel.

Twice in the last six years I had not done this, I had just torn them up and thrown them away - BIG mistake!

This week I went in at 8am to close my accounts (that's another story) at a certain bank and, along with all the other obstacles I was made to jump, was asked to produce all unused cheques. Obviously I could not produce the two destroyed cheques. I was then told I must go and report the two missing cheques to the police and bring back their report before my accounts could be closed. Spent another hour with the police who wouldn't write the required report. Back to the bank who then got their lawyer involved, produced a declaration for me to sign at the notary office (cost 25 TL). Bank closed by then, so back again at 8am next day. Accounts finally closed at 9am.

You just couldn't make it up!

So happy I shall never have to enter their doors again.

Not with you on this one. Find out how much the balance is, write a cheque to cash and withdraw all funds, leaving a zero balance and walk away, of course having already cleared out any monies in savings accounts. Sorted!

Brinsley,

Yes, I nearly did that, but the emptied accounts would still be open and would be incurring monthly charges - so would the two attached credit card accounts (which I never asked for!). I did not want to give the bank another penny so I persevered through to eventual closure.

Regards,

Ozbey.

It then becomes a dormant account which is a bank write off.

Brinsley,

I find it hard to believe that any TRNC business, especially a bank, would write off fees that I owe them. Are you certain of your facts?

Besides, I wasn't prepared to take that chance.

Seems the banks are very happy to mortgage properties that have been bought and payed for by a third party!

Brinsley,

As you have ignored my question and changed the subject, I assume you were not certain of your fact (or even made it up). Not very helpful to others. Enough said.

Yes, your question was addressed but if you like flinging 25TL in the air willy nilly, your prerogative!

I still have an account at HSBC, Garanti and Turkbank, or so I assume. All are empty. In fact the Turkbank was dormant for nigh on 12 months before we left the island. I've never been chased for any monies that I amy or may not owe them.
