Hi all,

Gonna move from UK over to North Cyprus in month or 2 to does anyone know what's cheaper or better?

To buy TV 's in the UK and ship it with household goods or buy it from over there?

Will appreciate your advice.

Thanks

Buy it in the UK - MUCH cheaper to buy a recognised brand - test it works, box it up in the original packaging and ship it in the container

Panasonic 50 - from under 700 GBP.. (approx 1750 Tl)

Slightly off topic but having read so much recently about TV systems could someone recommend which system would be best for me for holiday home.

I am looking for a basic package of about 6/8 British speaking channels, news, entertainment and maybe music

I would like a one off payment for system and install not subscription TV.

Anyone got such a thing ?

Yeh, risk hav'n't confiscated because it's new (only used goods accepted). Plus if they 'tipple' that it's new pay up to 40% duty, plus 15-17% KDV, plus TV license fee and shipping. You'll have no guarantee without tripplin' up on shippin' (not an easy thing to do on a 50" TV.)

I don't recommend bendin'/breakin' the rules, (weigh up the risk/gain.)

Not good advice from M&M, but we've covered this in another thread.

I heard that Plasma TVs consume too much electricity and the production is phasing out. On the other hand, after LCD TVS, noe LED TVs are becoming very popular.

>> back advice from mmmmmm<<

IF you ever read anything before typing..

1/ The topic is about someone moving out...

2/ When you use it in the UK for some time before moving it *is* USED... Bring the receipt ..

3/ there's been plenty of posters tell us about the tiny "duty" they've paid on their TVs when shipped out

Ismet

Plasmas consume about 20% more than their LCD equiv, but cost less and ( I think) offer better value, rendition of blacks and contract and viewing angles...

Unless you live about 2,000m ( Plasmas) can develop as buzz - and you want 42" or greater - Plasma EVERY TIME...( £ for £)

Both LCD and Plasma will soon face new competition from Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and Surface-conduction electron-emitter displays (SED) televisions.

mmmmmm.......the topic is entitled "To >!*buy*!< 50" Plasma in the Uk or Cyprus?

There are also plenty of posters who have had big problems with Customs.

"If I ever read anything before typing" - that's a laugh!

It's just too easy

Turtle.....there, I've been and got it for you.

Janice...buy a refurbished dish and receiver or, go to Tektan in town. I have got the number of a local chap that will line it up for you. Anything else will almost certainly cost you ££££'s.

Alternatively, there are virtually hundreds of installers here to chose from. You don't need to pay a subscription of any type to get lots of channels including 6 English speaking with FIlms etc.

Email me off board for the phone number.

Bring anything Electrical from the UK as its so expensive here, I bought My Large TV and 2 small combi tv over with my shipments no trouble at all, take off all labels even off the plug, as if it has been used, but just say you save the box for when you moved.

There seems to be too camps here:-

Camp 1 - Those that are quite prepared to break the law, flout the rules, run the risk, throw caution to the wind, who wander blindly along until something goes wrong and then blame everyone else when it does.

Camp 2 - Those that are law-abiding, who, stick to the rules, weigh up the risk, proceed with caution and rely upon considered judgement in all matters.

The original question was "To buy 50" Plasma in the UK or Cyprus - what's cheaper or, better?"

In a nutshell, yes, you can save 'some' money by stepping into camp one and buying in the UK and passing it off as 'used,' but after shipping, insurance and tv licence costs, you will not save a lot (if anything) but there are very 'real' risks involved - Customs do this job everyday, they know what to look for! If you come unstuck, be prepared to pay up to 40% duty, 17.5% KDV, fines, confiscation! and, what about the "Guarantee!"

I am in camp 2, which camp are you in?

Plus, have a read of this thread to see what happens when things go wrong in NC...... Jez - hairdresser at GHD (next to Starling)

I don't know the exact circumstances, but it seems 'Jez' had a couple of pieces of paper wrong and look what's happened to him.

Proceed with extrem caution in all things NC

Hi Washerman

there are TWO camps here..ok..

1/ Those that read,

2/ and those that when reminded of the ACTUAL Q the OP ( orig.poster asks) STILL don't address the question...

>>Gonna move from UK over to North Cyprus in month or 2 to does anyone know what's cheaper or better? <<

So, we've established the poster isn't living in the "TRNC", yet..and has a month or two before he DOES..

>>To buy TV 's in the UK and ship it with household goods or buy it from over there? <<

Now, IF he buys cheaper in the UK and uses it before he leaves - gives it a good testing ,and keeps the receipt, - is it "new" ? .. NO..

So would he be cheating " customs "? ..HARDLY.

I also note you are suggesting punters buy used sat dishes... unless they are small ( say 1m) or less and look perfectly symmetrical - or they are warranted by the installer - who has a good reputation - you could be buying a "pig in a poke"..

GOOD installers will only offer used larger dishes if they KNOW
