Wow ! what a question to ask.. how long have you got ? ;)

If you want BBC / ITV in CY you'll need a 4.2m dish

Most SKY stuff - esp in HD, a good 1.8M will do ( except for BBC/ ITV) - but you'll get the best BBC sport on the red button on BBC News 24 !

Only want a 1m dish - then aim a dish at Nilesat and you'll get about 6 channels worh watching - some with Arabic ads..

If you are going to LIVE permanently, there are ways to subscribe to Digiturk, and other pay TV channels and even some companies who will pirate pay tv channels.

If I was using your place as a holiday home, I'd get Nilesat - and if subscribing to SKY back home, I'd bring my HD box in the suitcase and fit a 1.8m - you'll still get 50 odd UK channels

The BEST sat expert on the island is "iceman"

Janice...buy a refurbished dish and receiver or, go to Tektan in town. I have got the number of a local chap that will line it up for you. Anything else will almost certainly cost you ££££'s.

Alternatively, there are virtually hundreds of installers here to chose from. You don't need to pay a subscription of any type to get lots of channels including 6 English speaking with FIlms etc.

Email me off board for the phone number.

Mr Washerman, or should it be (I have a mate who will)

There are not hundreds of installers here, there are a few (another Washerism) you first need to decide what package or what kind of TV you wish to watch.

When you have decided that shop around, the advice that both MM and I gave you is that we know that the Iceman does a good job there may be more and I am sure there are but we don't know the quality of thier work.

OK, Hoppi.....I have the number of a local chap (who owns a shop, on the right, just before the T-Junction after the Bellapais traffic lights, who has lined up 20-30 dishes for people that I know) BTW he is not my mate!

OK, there aren't hundreds, but neither is there only 1 option (Iceman) - I also have several telephone numbers for other satellite fitters.

Additionally, Tektan, (a shop in town) has dishes and receivers and installs.

BTW, my posting was not for personal gain, it was to highlight that there are alternatives to the 'repeatedly ' recommended solutions put forward on this board.

Yes, but Dear Washerman,, does the guy you know have the respect of installers ALL over Europe for his knowledge?

ANYONE can aim a bin lid at a satellite and run a bit of any old cable and call it an "install"..

Unless you are talking a small ( 1m) dish - ANYONE with a knowledge of the industry will tell you buying a larger second-hand dish is fraught with possible "problems" and the dish HAS to be a perfect parabolic shape - or it will be as much use as a chocolate teapot. You won't KNOW that until it is erected. If buying second-hand you need to see it working first - and have it uninstalled and reinstalled professionally.

On a board where we read of too many problems, you DON'T hear any any about "Iceman's" after sales service .

Dear Cyprusairsoft

re msg 11

YES.. not all red button functions require a phone line..

for example on BBC News 24 next weekend you will get the European F1 GP feeds that only 4.2m can normally get on BBC1 ;)

>>The question was "can anyone tell me where we can get satellite installed and how much it costs ?" <<

YES, Paul and I replied with the link to contact *the* guy ...

YOU responded with "advice" to use a "refurbed dish" :o... and a suggestion that I derive some personal gain from recommending Iceman..... )))

Now is you expertise in the field of sat comms or sat TV ( reception only ?) ...

Janice... I have no financial link to Mustafa.. I don't sell him stuff and he doesn't buy from me.. I just KNOW he's a great engineer who knows his onions.. I hope whoever you choose will look after you and good luck.

mmmmmm - I haven't suggested that you get personal gain from recommending Iceman, simply that there are other options.

Having lived and worked here for six and a half years, my expertise is in local knowledge of many things.

As far as being an expert in satellite, I don't need to be an expert to understand that there must be other alternatives, than the one you keep shoving down everyone's throat!

Anyway, I am going to set up a new section on my web site where people can get all the relevant information. When it is complete, I will advertise it and you can go there and pull it to pieces if you like.

Davidot's I am interested in purchasing the dish for the right price. Let's see how difficult it is to put one up and get a signal. I'll video it and publish the results on my web site.

if you use an 8 way splitter on a 1.8 dish will you loose any of the signal.

If you use a multi-switch - a device which allows independent use of a shared dish - as if you each had your own - YES - you DO lose some signal. The length and quality of cable used can cut this loss down.

Then why post >>my posting was not for personal gain<< as if to infer MINE was ?!

>>As far as being an expert in satellite, I don't need to be an expert to understand that there must be other alternatives, than the one you keep shoving down everyone's throat! <<

Well, you have clearly demonstrated your ignorance of things satellite AND customer service ( if some of the posts on here are to believed) and NOW you are looking for some punters to be a "Guinea Pig" while you "learn" ?!!

What bird will you be aiming at, and which are the weakest transponders?

MMMMMM: "and if subscribing to SKY back home, I'd bring my HD box in the suitcase and fit a 1.8m - you'll still get 50 odd UK channels"

What about an 'ordinary' sky box, would that be worth bringing, or just HD?

Hi Teamtime

re 22

>>What about an 'ordinary' sky box, would that be worth bringing, or just HD?<<

Sure, but you just won't get so many channels as the HD ones tend to be stronger - plus you can't easily record peak time UK TV.

re msg 21

Suggest you re-read post number two.. it answered Janice' questions..giving her two simple options.. and remember *I'm* not on here to "drum up" biz .. Your knowledge of things satellite is demonstrably "iffy"..
