hi jock

no you dont need a tv licence, when you buy a new tv in cyprus the tax (licence fee)is included in the price if you look on the back of a new tv you will see a holographic sticker which reads trt (turkish,radio-television) and if you bring a tv from abroad thats why you pay a badroll tax fee to cover this purpose

hope this helps matey

Hi Uturk

Can you recommend a shop to purchase 26" LCD TV. We have made all our purchases for our apartment locally in TRNC-furniture, curtains, linen, small electrical goods etc but are struggling to find anywhere for competitively priced LCD TV. We are only going to use to play DVD/Playstation and not to receive TV (at moment). Any suggestions please. We are prepared to pay a little more than UK prices but TV's seem to be very expensive. Thanks

hi dicko

if you do go for name brands like sony, panasonic you will pay a lot more than you would do in the u.k, but if you go for turkish name brands like beko or arcelik or even lg you will find them quite reasonable try the arcelik store in the middle of girne or ram trading also in the centre also try toros they supply all kins of tv's all these shop are located on the same street Bedreddin Demirel Cad

i hope this helps

Buy one in Tesco's for £449, wrap the box in bubble wrap, stick it in a big suitcase, fly BA to Larnaca (luggage limit currently 32 kilos), taxi to TRNC via Metahan.

No problemo!

Thanks for the info Uturk. Also thanks to you Lemtich. We are using Monarch so weight limit only 20kg & £6 per kg excess weight. Will have a look when over and if can't find a decent price will go without. No real hardship!

An NC resident friend of ours advised us to NOT bring in a TV. The one they brought over had a perfect picture but no sound. The sound was incompatable in Cyprus (he did explain why and he's an ex Bt engineer, but I switched off I'm afraid). Has anyone else had the same advice?

hi janjin

who ever told you that the sound is incompatable in cyprus sorry to say dont know what they are talking about!!!!! the only problem with tv's is the system they use like pal-secam and ntsc but this does not make any diffrence to cyprus cos they use the pal system (same as the u.k)and the same plug (3 pin) and same voltage, so if you want to bring out a tv from the u.k then do so

We have never had a prob with our TVs from UK. 1 (flatscreen 18') we bought out in our handluggage and the big one we shipped in our container. We had to pay the licence/tax on container 1 it was 12 Gbp or 12 ytl cannot remember and that is a one off payment. No probs with sound or pictures.

Hi ukturk

As I said the advice was from a friend who imported thier furniture and he's an ex BT engineer. 1 TV was OK and the other had the prob I mentioned previously. I'm just as interested to know if this is the case as I'm not techno minded. I was just curious so I thought I'd ask.

hi janjin

of course you shud ask if you are curious!!! the tv syem used here is no diffrent to the system used in the u.k both pal, the other tv's sound which is not working can be a few things firstly the speakers could of been damaged in transit, the other thing which is probabley the problem is the scart lead which connects the satellite box or the dvd player to the tv can be faulty, try changing the lead a new one costs 10ytl and if your sat box or tv has two scart output sockets try alternate it

All TVs from the Uk that will be used for terestrial channels will be incompatible (eg no sound) as the frequecy is slightly different. Eg Uk is PAL I and Turkey and Cyprus is Pal B G. If you take your Tv to any satellite/tv shop they will fix this problem for around 20ytl.

We were thinking of bringing our TV over to TRNC when we retire there at the end of September, what tax would we have to pay (instead of the licence fee)?

If it comes in a container of household goods, and it's the only TV, then you probably won't be charged any import duty.

2nd and 3rd TVs are charged a fairly nominal amount (£25? - can't remember!).

If you bring it on the 'plane with you and go through Ercan, I shouldn't think that anyone would even turn a hair - I've seen people manhandling HUGE packages of household goods / appliances off the luggage belts, and due to the years of embargo and isolation, Customs appear to accept it as a perfectly normal thing to do...

So particularly if it is a 'used' item (and do try to find the receipt / guarantee or other proof-of-purchase) then you should not have to pay.

Enjoy!

Keith.
