I have seen this question being asked before and people were very helpful. Times have obviously changed.

Is it not right that you have to have a local driving licence to own or drive anythig other than a hire car.

Also you have to have a residancy permit to obtain a licence?

Tootie,

You can drive any car on a Foreign (e.g. UK / EU) driving licence as long as you have the owner's permission, and provided that the insurance covers you - it normally does as the system here seems to be to insure the car, rather than the driver.

Don't know the answer to the residency / local licence question though, sorry.

However you can drive on a Foreign licence for about as long as your visitor's Visa lasts, so it's probably not an issue really...

Claire you know that times have changed here, and its best to be completely legal as the consequences are horrendous if someone local decides to grass you !! as we have all seen with the Gez situation, anyway business is tough so let visitors spend especially on car hire. can you imagine having an accident and this remunerated loan car thing gets out, you dont get a free breakfast in jail here

Mr Scott - didn't you already post that you had secured car hire for £8.00 pounds per day. I appreciate the fact that you've said it was probably a daft idea to ask someone to lend you a car, but how much cheaper do you think you are going to get a hire car for?

Just a point here - you have obviously never driven in TRNC. If I were you, I'd take the 'rent a wreck' for 8 quid a day.

Thanks Jeannie and all.

The good thing about people posing questions on these forums is that they end up highlighting important issues which may only be applicable in NC.

The voluntarily given tips, hints, sound advice and even comments can give the enquirer all the information necessary to make up his/her mind about anything in NC... and that can only be good for all.

I think all forum initiators should have the ability to highlight all relevant points made on a particular subject for the benefit of all, and then be able to delete the rest, making it easier for newcomers to read.

newscoop,

You're not going to want to hear this if you already paid the fines, but here goes anyway...

If someone else was driving the car, just give the police their name - you don't need their passport number, or anything - and they will check the 'ins and outs' computer to make sure that the person you have named was actually in the country at the time.

Next time that person presents themselves at a 'point of entry' to TRNC, they will be advised of their offence, and told to report to a police station.

If they dispute the fact that it was them driving, the police will produce the photographic evidence to identify the driver (you could always try driving around in one of those rubber President Nixon masks ).

I understand that this is open to abuse, with people 'dealing' in points and fines (like carbon credits!) - the photographic stuff is only used in case of a dispute - but I really wouldn't recommend it in the light of recent events...

Anyway, you'll know next time
