There seems to be a lot of restaurant owners who look on this board. Have any of you come up with a way yet of safeguarding all the money smokers spend in your establishments when the law comes into force?

At least over there it's only a couple of months when it'll affect business.

I England there are pubs closing down at a quite drastic rate.

Good news to all you pessimists. We were in Western Australia when the no smoking rule came in - and it is a fierce rule - no smoking at open air firework displays as well! My boozy friends said 'It will kill cafes, pubs, the lot." Did it? NO IT DID NOT. Smokers can go outside - no prob. It just makes it difficult for the non smokers who want to sit outside and enjoy life.

And anyway, one one muist consider the health of all - that' sonly fair, isn't it.

Blimey - don't go wishing that. Isn't the TRNC's economy in enough trouble as it is?

brandy sour - sorry, my message was not in any way meant to promote smoking. If you look at the times the messages were posted, both yours and mind were posted at exactly the same time and crossed. My message was in response to CJtill.

I've never been a smoker, but I can just about understand the attraction of cigarettes and the pleasure that smokers derive.

However...how addicted must people be if they can't go out for a few hours to a bar or restaurant without the overwhelming need to light up ?

cronos - I can honestly say that the worse day's work I ever did was to light up a cigarette. It was considered 'cool' at the time and of course the damage smoking caused was not known then.

However, I must say, I appreciate the fact that over the past few years, smoking has been banned in more and more places; aircraft, trains, restaurants, etc. and can, obviously, see the huge benefits to people's health, not to mention it is much more pleasant to be in a smoke-free environment.

NC was 'the last bastion' when it came to allowing people to smoke in restaurants.

I'm vey interested to see how this smoking ban will work here in the trnc, personally I do not feel that we are quite ready for this yet and I have funny feeling that not many people will be abiding to this law... I feel that the goverment have seen this as another opportunity to generate income via fines.

Lets see how many casinos, brothels, bars & discos will be fined.. or will it be a case of "who you know"

As far as I'm aware the ban is specifically excluded in Casinos. Can anyone confirm this?

Obviously not a ban for health reasons then is it?

Stonehousepub - couldn't agree with you more! I think they will find it very difficult to implement this in TRNC.

Here's a small example (my husband has posted this before, but)

Smoking is now banned at Ercan airport. Paul went in the toilet just before we boarded our flight. The gents toilet was full of blokes smoking, including 2 policemen!

Like you, I, too, do not see everyone abiding by this 'law'

Dont think it will be that hard at all, the police will be trying to get funds in some how, plus the non smokers will possibly report the pubs cafes/restaurants that break the law just as they did in GB. Hence fines.

Lets face it, it is not hard to smoke outside in NC, why make it uncomfortable for others who either have an illness and need protect themselves from the smoke, or folks that just dont like smelling like other peoples used ash trays, its yuk and gross for me any how. Just hate the smell in my clothes when I have been to any function. Dont think that smokers realise how much others dislike the smell,

Msg 11 "Here in Norway we have the same rule they are going to get, and no one has gone bankrupt"

Unfortunately the same can't be said in England, pubs are closing on average 2 per week, not all to do with the smoking ban, but must be partly to do with it. The places that have invested in good outdoor facilities seem to be doing better.

Lilli I am sure your trade will not drop off, as the pubs in England have suffered because of drink driving, nothing to do with smoking, just look at the Harvester pubs they are jammed full of people that like to have food and not subjected to the smoke of others.

Teatime said "At least over there it's only a couple of months when it'll affect business".

Restaurants are outside between Mid May & Mid October. 5 months outside & 7 months inside.

Jeanette - no, it is not warm in TRNC all year round - and as far as I know, nor is it in Turkey. The winters can be extremely cold.

Msg 20: Dizzycows, Harvesters are eating establishments, that's why they tend not to be affected. I was talking 'drinking' pubs, who haven't the room to diverse to food, they are badly affected.

Msg 22: "Restaurants are outside between Mid May & Mid October. 5 months outside & 7 months inside"

Maybe I don't live in Cyprus, as you point out, but I have been there outside of Mid May to Mid October and have found it pleasant enough outside. Or does it make you soft living there?

I have just learned that there is already a law in the trnc which bans you from smoking in your car,as far as I know it's been in place for quite some time.

Anyone else heard of it?.

In my opinion it's the price of drinks in the pubs that is having an effect on trade, we have three PUBS local one a carvery for £5 one two meals for £10 and the other buy one get one free, it costs more to buy the drinks.

28: Agree, I did say the non-smoking was only part of the problem. I think the sheer difference of the prices pubs need to charge, compared to what it can be bought for in supermarkets, is crazy.

I could not see a problem with the old fashioned 'snug' in pubs, whereby, if a room could be completely seperate it could be a smoking room. It tended to work before the total ban came in.

27: Some of the smaller pubs with no outside space have no chance to 'diversify', as for "what the marketplace wants", the marketplace was not given a choice, the Nanny State seen to that.

Teatime, the market place is saying it doesnt want smoking in any public places, if anyone has an addiction, this can be accomodated in their own home! Nothing to do with a nanny state, Smoking kills, why should non smokers be subjected to their habit, smoking has become a form of anti social behaviour. I for one do not allow it in my home, or work place, no one objects as they know it has become anti social. These pubs can put up a shelter just for these people, most pubs have a back ally and if they want just the smokers they will make sure that something will accomodate them.

Yes they are Troods, I do not subject you smokers to my 'orrible habit' so why should you expect us to tolerate yours which does others harm. My husband has not been able to go to many places because of Asthma, smoke brinks it on, and many other people have heart problems that smoke harms them, where is their human rights, clearly below your selfish habit. Just think of kids as well, some children become very ill after injesting smoke or smoke on clothes, you cant tell me you dont really care.

Gates, lets hope you too can now go out and enjoy like you should have been able to, the majority of smokers are not selfish, but you do get some that light up around you, and expect you to 'enjoy' their stale smell and smoke,

Msg 30: "the market place is saying it doesnt want smoking in any public places"

I think you mean 75% of the market place. If pubs wanted to be a smoking establishment, why shouldn't they be allowed to be? Non smokers wouldn't have to go there. What is the big problem with freedom of choice? Therefore it is something to do with a nanny state!

well said teatime. The law on smoking has been accepted by the morjority of smokers, but it seems to me than non smokers want to stop it outside as well, so who is the selfish one. a bit of give and take would be good. I enjoy a cigarette after a meal and am quite happy to sit outside in any weather. So non smokers give us a break!

ginty, as a non smoker, I have never wanted to sit, drink or even go into a pub that smells. I have no objection to you smoking in your own homes or outside, so give US a break from your selfish habits.! If a pub wants just smokers then so be it, non smokers will usually avoid these sort places anyway, so stop feeling sorry for yourself and do the same as the majority of smokers do now and that is 'puff' away where non smokers are!

This issue polarises opinion.

You are either for or against.

Personally I don't care one way or the other but I do notice back in the UK how non smokers mysteriously gravitate to the smoking areas for the chit chat.

Remember; non smokers too have a choice, they can stay at home rather than impose their will on others but that's not the British way in these enlightened times.

If they really care about doing the right thing then they can stay in blighty and not use those anti social aircraft with all their carbon emissions and help save the planet. And as for farmers they can cull the livestock and reduce all that nasty methane

Lagoon Bar doesn't have fully solid walls. Half way up and to the top are are a roll up plastic type of material. I belive they ae exempt from the smoking law, but I'm sure Theresa will answer that if she comes on the board.

Newscoop, its nothing to do with carbon emissions or livestock or my granny or anything that you try to divert away from smoking/non smoking in pubs! Not stopping you smoking, just dont do it around non smokers. Remember lots of people have stayed at home just because of the smokers selfishness for years. We do not impose any thing on you, but it is time to look at what other people want as well as your good self, or are you too selfish?

Dizzycows;let's get this right, you want smokers to stay away from bars so non smokers can enjoy their social life.

Here's an idea; why don't you and other like minded folk find a nice sanitised bar, ban all smokers inside and out, then discuss the guardian amongst yourselves.

Sounds like fun.

In the meantime those poor deluded smokers can congregate in their bars and talk about various subversive subjects like football, cricket, rugby, politics, religion, health fascism, lack of water, etc.

Sounds like even more fun.

Newscoop go smoke it on your own space, I would not even go any where near you whilst you are huffing and puffing at the weed!! You can drink yourself to death, smoke yourself to death, but dont impose your horrible smelly addiction on me. Intolerant to those who just blindly go on without a thought to their compatriates. Interfering no, thats in your mind dear boy, ' oh I want to do what I want mummy', throw your teddies out the pram, sling any old excuse to the non smokers to try and justify their addiction.! We dont want your space darling, you just keep on puffing away and then you will end up with lungs like my poor mother who coughed up black lumps, and died a horrible death, she smoked all her life and gave up too late to save her.

I looked after her for the last 3 yrs of her life and can tell you it is not a nice death, lungs a mass af blackened tar. So go on newscoop, tell me who is going to look after you when your lungs, heart and arteries pack up, your poor sods of a con-

of a family who love you?? sorry but you are the selfish one. It is heart breaking to watch someone desperate for air, nothing any one can do for them, the desperation in their eyes for you to help them breath, no newscoop I do not wish that on any one. After the ban comes into force, no doubt we'll be moaned at for continually opening the door to outside when we have to go out into the driving rain (with no cover or seating provided) and therefore letting the heat out and the cold weather in. And, trust me, it IS COLD AND WET IN THE WINTER HERE. Might be a good idea to start taking those Vit C tablets now and remember, don't sit too near the door!

Clairecat44, I am sure it wont be as bad as you all think, you seem the sort to get on with things without blaming others. lol

Where have you gone teatime and newscoop? dont you like it when we non smokers get angry at your whinning?? As you have gone to ground, is this a sign that you will give up your addiction of the drug???

Perhaps you too are as weak, like the poor sods that take real drugs? heroin, cannabis etc. I wonder.......

Interesting that you need to make some form of connection re tobacco, heroin, cannabis, and the like.

Says a lot about you as a person.

Intolerant, fixated, patronising, nanny knows best, (reply to clairecat) refusal to allow an alternative viewpoint.

Did I mention holier than thou?

By the way; it does get extremely cold wet and miserable here in the winter.

PS; what I don't like is anybody in any walk of life forcing/imposing their own opinions/agendas on people who don't or can't conform to their autocratic way of thinking. (think nulabour, Harriet Harman, EU)

Newscoop perhaps we dont like patronising, intolerant, ignorant folks as yourself, you seem to think that if non smokers have an opinion different than yours re, not liking/wanting smoking around them , it gives you the god damb right to do just that. We are not imposing any thing on you, you can still smoke but not around us, thankyou. Have a nice puffing weekend .........

Dizzy;

there's only one answer to the conundrum

You patronise the establishments that have dedicated smoking sections

I'll patronise those that have dedicated non smoking sections.

By the way; watch the language and tone, it paints you as a harpie and is most unbecoming.

Well my dear if you could make sense it would help a little!! Language, dont think you know the meaning of this, or any thing else that is remotely human. I have said that in a previous post, you keep to your smelly side and we will keep to ours, no problem.Think also you may come unstuck with your theary of dedicated sections, as most decent establishments will encorperate a 'no smoking'. full stop, darling.....

I think a lot you underestimate the TC, I live in Lefkosa and do most of my eating out there, I can tell you that pretty much all of the cafe's and restuarants that I have been to in the last 8 months have had a strict no smoking inside policy, no one seems to mind and I have never seen a smoker in the non somoking areas. ANd the businesses are fine as many young TC don't smoke or even if they do do not want to smell of smoke at the end of the evening. I think the ones that will or are suffering will be the old style coffee houses, and worker cafes, but it will slowly become accpeted.

When I was in NZ at the start of the year, we went to an Irish bar on a saturday night, there must of been over 250 people in there, I needed to pop out for a ciggi, thinking there would be half the bar outside doing the same, what a shock I got when there were just 5 of us.

It maybe slow but people wll get use to the idea and it will become the norm.

kiwikid, you are right, it will be the as you have said, but some on this thread just cannot adjust or wont, and want to blame everone else.

If the smokers do smoke in a restuarant hoping that the authorities wont know, it wont be them fined, it will be the premises that will be fined and most businesses just cannot afford for this to happen. Plus they will be watched very closely if caught or suspected of breaking the enforsement.

I just hope that the majority will respect this, I think they will. lol

I find smokers are generally selfish. They would never think of asking if us non smokers if we mind getting smoke in our faces whilst trying to eat a meal. They think we are an annoyance to them. The stench up my nostrils, on my skin, in my hair and on my clothes really knocks me sick.

I for one am glad smoking is now banned in pubs and public places.

Smoking is very unhealthy. Smoke yourselves to death people. Feel free to wreck your body but don't expect me and my kids to inhale the filth as well. We choose not to smell like a stale ashtray.

Well I say that has got people riled.

First let me say that I am a smoker. I have also been a Publican (sold when the smoking ban was on the horizon in the UK)

Nobody can argue that it isn't unpleasant for some smokers to go into a smoky atmosphere but let's not pretend that it is market forces dictating the switch to the smoking ban. If the market had demanded it then there would have been a plethora of pubs that did not allow smoking in their premies and they would have been full of happy non smokers. The fact is there weren't many such establishments. Nor have many people started going to pubs as a result of the ban (50 a week closing).

What is annoying about the ban is the blanket nature of it, no choice for the punter or entrepreneur. Restaurants are different, they are primarily for food consumption, Pubs aren't or shouldn't be.

Harold2555, where dont you go any more? outside?

Ste65, agree with you, I just cannot understand why the smokers seem to think we like their smell, its a horrible stale smell. I dont impose a smelly habit on others so expect the same from my fellow humans.

I can go out of an evening to a non smoking establishment, and not have to wash my hair when I get home, brill.

I dont think smokers realise that they smell either.

It has become a class issue as well, it was always seen as a lower class issue, fags hanging out the corner of their mouths, shouting at tribes of kids on council house estates, call me a snob but thats how its portrayed even now, just take a look at all the ones that are on social, all mostly fat, fag, sloppy lot.

Now wait for the it!!!!! lol

Has dizzycows mentioned whether she's a life long non smoker or an ex-smoker who somewhere along the way saw the light?

Somehow, judging by her postings, I think not.

Ever wondered why people who smoke keep on smoking? It is bad for us! It makes us smelly to non-smokers, it costs us money and eventually, to some, it will kill them! Sounds bad to me, so why do I still smoke?

Ever wondered why non-smokers bang on about smokers all the time? They get to sit in their multi smelling perfumed cloud, having arrived in their gas driven vehicles - slowly killing people with carbon along the way - and then when they go home they don't need to wash themselves or their clothes because - WOW - they have no smoke in their hair or on their clothes! But then they are not being killed by second hand smoke in much the same way that I am not being killed by living close to a Nuclear Power Plant.

Yes, I smoke. Can't tell you why I don't stop when I know all the dangers. But I don't inflict it on others so why persecute me and alianate me for being a smoker? It is a bit like saying - if you wear purple you have to stand outside!!! Why???

Oh dear msg65 I certainly am not a smoker, msg 48/9 explains why I dislike smoking so much. I was in my early thirties then and loved my mother very much as did my children, hence they too are all non smokers. .....

It is not a case of being able to go off on my own - everyone has that right. What you have done is remove my right to freedom in the same way as you remove the rights of other minority groups. I would never smoke amongst non-smokers nor would I subject non-smokers to second hand smoke - knowingly. But I am daily subject to excess of perfume/aftershave, sweaty flesh in skimpy clothing (with the "I am on holiday" excuse), bad breath, carbon emisions from vehicles, hair spray residue and worst of all alchol breath and the unhealthy attitude of drinkers.

Yet nobody would dream of taking away the rights of this group and making them drink in isolation or sit in a perfume/aftershave controlled zone! Nobody will stop using vehicles even though we all know we are killing the world with emissions by doing so!

Whatever happened in the world where you now feel free to turn upon those afflicted with this smoker illness instead of trying to help? Feel proud of what you do.

So now all you filthy smokers know what you have to do if you want to enjoy a ciggie, find a quiet corner, definitely not on the beach, preferably about three miles from the nearest non smoker ( and their children/grandchildren/dog/cat etc), before you light up check that there really is nobody lurking within breathing distance. Move your tribe of children out of the way, hide the benefit book in case it sets on fire, hold your fat stomach and spare tyre in and light that ciggie, enjoy it while you can before the Ban the Bensons Brigade find you and have you exterminated.

It would appear you are all committing a cardinal sin by smoking so just stop it now, I'm sure there must be other vices that you could take up, drink, drugs perhaps.

no we are not a sad bunch, why cant people live and let live. Most smokers woud not dream of lighting up in a restaurant but equally they do not want to be frowned upon if they choose to sit outsdie and smoke. Come on now! a compromise should be be reached and more tolerance shown. I do not drink and to see people drunk I think is dreadful but I would never interfere or have a down on anyone that did. Let people live there lives how they want anda bit of give and take would not come amis.

Compromise is obviously not a word in this ladies vocabulary, it appears it must be all or nothing, well, in her dreams I'm afraid, people have the right to choose whether to smoke or not and as long as smokers are considerate to others it should be live and let live.

They tried to bring the smoking ban in Barcelona, Spain when I was living there but had to slightly change it as most bars and restaurants were suddenly empty and no-one was going out anymore, now they have to have air con/fans fitted that suck up the smoke fumes and if the place is large enough they have a non smokers AND smokers section, this is fairer and everyone is happy.

In the UK it's very extreme and where my friend works there isn't a smoking area inside anymore, the workers have to go out-side on the roof and get wet and nearly blown away with the blustery winter weather just to have a cigarette on their breaks and there are no seats, after they have been on their feet all day working in the department store, lovely!

I wonder how this thread would change if an alcohol ban came into play in the TNRC?!!!!! Afterall it's a muslim country... worried?! Angry?! Now you know how smokers feel! & btw drinking is just as disugusting and drinkers stink too!

Well thats good then. You lot do a lot of selective reading dont you!! If you were to have read the posts properly you would see that you can all smoke where ever you like, but not in eating houses, or around non smokers, or children ---------simple. Or is it to much to ask that? It happens also that it is not the non smokers bringing this law in its the governments!!! Have a nice puffing, huffing day

Msg 87, I am answering your hysterical answers !! Bringing up drinking is going off the tread. As a half glass of red wine person this too would not worry me, but in fact a heck of a lot of people drink at home now, in their own environment. Plus it is only mainly the young that get paraletic and then think they can conquer the world!!

Msg 87 you obviously want to win & have the last word well no, you put your point across too insultingly previously in this thread, I quote:

-It has become a class issue as well, it was always seen as a lower class issue, fags hanging out the corner of their mouths, shouting at tribes of kids on council house estates, call me a snob but thats how its portrayed even now, just take a look at all the ones that are on social, all mostly fat, fag, sloppy lot.-

If you insist on being a rude, argumentative, over opinionated individual why don't you apply to become a journalist for one of those meaningless local papers here and you can rant and rave all day if you like, or go back to England because btw if you think the locals here will respect the ban you can think again, in a restaurant we go to in town they already have a no smoking sign up with locals smoking happily right under it!

looks like you chose the wrong island!

Lighten up, ladies!

In NZ (joke shop) one can buy exploding capsules that you can poke into the end of a 'gasper' - 2 types, really; one where your ciggy goes off like a German cannon a coupla secs after you light up, and the other, the same, plus you end up with a black face - soot! Primo party trick - almost as good as the condom over the head....you know the one!

Ok, ladies, here's an NZ cocktail - very popular at Chrissy time:

Fill a liqueur glass with Cointreau - holding a drinking glass upside down, offer up the liqueur glass to the base of the drinking glass and holding the liqueur glass, quick as a wink, flip the drinking glass right-side up and fill with lager. When you tip the glass to your luscious lips, ladies, a sexy stream of Cointreau slides down your 'pudding shute' a beauty - chased by the cool, frothy lager - orgasmic going, ladies!!!
