I am not being a scaremongerer here, but I am warning all that we are 100% sure our credit card has been cloned in the TRNC in the last few days. I checked our account this morning on line and noticed a cash withdrawel in Russia??? Now, we have certainly not been to Russia. I rang the Bank and they confirmed a copy has been used in Moscow in the last couple of days. I am not a whizz kid in this sort of stuff and I know there are numerous ways this can happen however, the other day my better half tried to get cash from an ATM in Girne which did not dispense money? She did use another machine and that worked. Just check your accounts regulaly if you don't already, I soptted this early and the card is now blocked. And yes, my better half has it in her hand so it was not stolen.

Can you let us know which ATM failed to dispense money,as it may have been tampered with? Did you report it to the branch concerned?

Always, always check the ATM. Could have been a fake card reader stuck over the ATM and keyboard. Quite common in the UK. Other scam was when handing over card to make a payment, the card was swiped through a card reader under the desk. This happened more than once, local to me in Shell petrol stations. My wife was caught this way. Very common in restaurants. This is why in UK anyway, you now are asked to put your own card in machine so that no one else has contact. Beware also the mobile card payment reader often used in restaurants. It sends out a signal that can be intercepted via a laptop and your card details obtained.

Cronos, Sorry, I am in Jordan, I am not actually pointing the finger at this ATM because it would be difficult to prove? It was a couple of days ago. Am I merely warning people that it is happening somewhere in the TRNC, I know thats not much help but, just be more careful than usual and keep checking your acounts?

Hector, In the early days of wireless credit card terminals you are correct in that signals could be detected by wireless monitors and decoded by computers. Today the system uses 128 bit encyrption and the hand helds are "married" electronically to the main terminal that processes the information to the Credit Card Clearing Houses. The 128 bit Encryption system can be intercepted admittedly but decoding would take longer than the average life time.
