Hi everyone, you were so helpful with my first post on car hire, I'm back again.

My wife and I are visiting from 6th to 19th of September, staying in Esentepe. I would be grateful for any recommendations, advise or tips you may have. We will have a car so we would like to see some of the Island. Can anyone recommend restaurants that aren't over the top on price and offer good local food, what is the best currency to use while we're there and any other information you think we may find useful to make the best of our stay.

Thanks

Most of the restaurants in and around Esentepe are fine, try them all, you'll soon decide which you like the best. Sterling is accepted nearly everywhere, but you will get better rates if you change this into Turkish Lira. Easy to reach most places from Esentepe, worth visiting, Karpas, Kantara, Gazimagusa, Lefkosa, Kyrenia, St Hillarion, Bellapaise, and definately only a short distance from Esentepe Antiphonitis Church. There are also super mountain drives just outside of Esentepe. There is a petrol garage in the village and various small shops.

Enjoy your stay

Hi

Change english money into Turkish Lira when you get here rate is better than in England.

Esentepe Villa Hotel is good to eat at. Must go to Zirdeli, free wine on wednesdays and fish and chip night on a monday all after 8pm not expensive at all, good food though.

Joya is a little more expensive but excellent food for a nice night out.

Stevie's Bar east along the coast road way is another, good food not too expensive place to eat.

Then Kyrenia is only 40 mins away from Esentepe with all the bars and restaurants to take your pick from.

Enjoy your time here and come back again!!!!

Try the Belediye place near Kaplica, mainly fish dishes (including meze) and very good value but avoid weekends when it can get packed. From Esentepe you drive East keeping to the coast road, some parts of the road are a bit rough but passable. The restaurant is right by the sea in a lovely, slightly shaded wooden structure, at the roadside they have wooden chalets for rent. Last time we went Voppa(similar to sardines) with meze was around 12 TL.

For dog owners, please note that they no longer allow dogs in the outside part of the restaurant.

a visit to Esentepe wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Mongers and who knows if you are lucky they might even show you their Skandinavian credit card collection.....

Message 9.

Unfortunately just too many up and down reviews on this forum of the Antique from people in the past

Maybe me, but it appears to change ownership frequently and I don't like taking 50/50 chances on whether i'm going to get a good or bad meal so will not be going their again, at least not until i'm satisfied that it's consistently good.

Poppin nice curry, special 10 YTL portion size not massive but with rice and a few extras very tasty, also u can see football or catch up with sky news/

Joya excellent food, more of a special meal out that a place for tea. Try mexiican steak about 32YTL also do kids portions half price.

Tatlisu Beleydie Beach- as some one already said wooden structure on beach, with little chalets on the right hand side. Meal prices very good, had Kalamari which came with 5 meze bread and chips for 15YTL enough for 2 people.

Kup Kebap opposite Lemar in town 5YTL kebab and 2.5 ytl for a beer, great place to stop on way back from beach or waterpark with the kids. Very filling.

Eagles nest- wonderful home made chips. the kids loved them.

We ate in other places but cant remember the names, in 3 weeks we never had a bad meal and the prices seemed quite reasonable this year, either that or my maths is rubbish.!!!

Has the road been resurfaced yet leading to Beleydie beach?

The last time we went along the road was very rough.

Hi, Msg 16, The Belediye beach is fifteen mins drive approx past the poppin just keep on going along the new coast road you will come to a couple of earth barricades but drive through the first one and when you come to the second one if my memory serves me correctly you turn back onto the old coast rd and that will take you down to the beach ,lovely setting they were biulding new timber w/e cabins in July when we were over.

The roundabout is not makeshift anymore it has been tarmaced & all the islands finished. Unfortunately the council did not tarmac the road if you go straight over the round about. But if you turn left on the old coast road most of the potholes have been filled in. When that road rejoins the new coast road, its wonderful new tarmac for a couple of miles, until it goes off onto the old road again before you get to the Beledeysi restuarant.

Hopefully the government will soon get the rest of the new coast road from Tatlisu to Kaplica finished (we've waited over 2 years already!)

I have to disagree with your comments on the Antique as i live in Esentepe and am a regular customer there. Since İsmail, the original owner has returned things have improved very much.

Maybe give it another try or you will never know for yourself. Reservations are recommended due to its popularity.

I think the return of Tony the chef has also helped in reviving it's reputation.
