I have had a rather large spider in my garden...i have made a vid of it, but it wont load onto my computer, so i will try to describe it...

It's body was about an inch and a half in diameter and was shaped like a boney crab, it's colour was very pale lime green with brown patterns on it. The legs were very very long with circles of brown and green repeated all the way down the legs. It kind of reminded me of those lime and chocolate sweeties! My turkish neighbour told me it was very dangerous to animals ie dogs and cats, and although not dangerous to humans, can cause a great deal of pain...how true this is i don't know...but i would really like to know what it could be. I have googled the hell out of it, but as don't know what sort of family it's from it is almost impossible to find. Please Help!!

Daisy, I think even if you locked yourself in an air tight tank you'd still find a spider, ants, snakes, or some sort of insect. Bless you, you must live on your nerves?

Tootie...not at all...i don't mind spiders in the slightest...i have lived in Africa and have seen some of the biggest spiders ever, so these here really do not bother me. However, i am extremely interested in knowing what this one is...guess i'm just creepy like that

Just the way i read you msg sounded like you was worried, and with your ant post aswell. Personally i cant stand anykind of spider, they freak me out!! I had one in the house a while ago and sucked it up the dyson but then realised i had to empty the bloody thing! needless to say i put it outside for a week and swept the floor instead! lol

Scooby...i suppose it is ugly, in a sort of amazing way...i find spiders absolutely fascinating, don't fancy having them crawl on me though!! lol

Tootie...ants are something else altogether!! Apart from the fact they are stealing my food...i really do have a phobia with them...i would rather have this spider and/or snakes in my house than them....i have no idea why they freak me out so much, and i do feel pathetic...but i can't help it!! I can't suck them up in a vacuum coz then i feellike they will make a home in the bag...i guess it's because they are so small and so mobile and so bloody intelligent....they can get in anywhere...i have a fear that they will crawl into my ears and have babies whilst eating my brain...aaaaarrrggghhhh!!! I'm gonna give myself nightmares now!!!!

daisy,

Can't help with the name but we had one also! Now we have chickens and they run around the whole garden - end result is no spiders, no small thin snakes, no big ants and lots of lizards without tails! Oh yes, the up side is free eggs - well 20 TL every two months for chicken feed but the rest is free and fun.

DD,

As usual nobody seems to want to answer a straightforward question!......... Have you looked at the various types of Camel spider we have here. Sounds very similar.

I had a big bugger in the house last week I screamed like a banshee even though I wouldnt kill it I kept thinking it was a tarantula. The dogs would not go near it. So much for protection. We couldnt shift it so as a last resort Guido got the hoover out . Needless to say I wouldnt empty the bag . they are a nightmare but we have to get used to these things invading our space xxx

I forgot to mention that the body on this spider was flat squat and roundish...also didn't seem to have the normal 2 parts ...ie head and abdomen...it was all in one, and seemed almost boney...sorry if this doesn't make any sense lol

Could be a Lynx Spider.

Lynx Spiders are hunting spiders that spend their lives on plants, flowers and shrubs. Nimble runners and jumpers, they rely on their keen eyesight to stalk, chase or ambush prey. Six of their eight eyes are arranged in a hexagon-like pattern, a characteristic that identifies them as members of the family Oxyopidae. They also have spiny legs.

Nope, not that either...as i said, the body is squat, round and appears to be very boney and flatish...the legs were super long.

I would really appreciate it, if someone who knows about spiders, would come to the Cyprus Queen bar tomorrow (wednesday) night after 5pm to try and figure this one out....

Hi Daisy Dukeias, don't think much money will be involved unless you contact Mr Attenbourgh. In normal years I could be there tonight to surf or stamp on the said insect. Anyway I hope you can find the answer but I wouldn't kill it this may be the answer to your prayer regarding your ant problem. I am in Scotland tonight but who knows wemight meet up before this year is out.

Out of interest do you wear really short shorts with your hair in staggily bunches and go on drives with two hot guys in a red car. (Now I know I have dementia). No disrespect meant just curious. (lol)

Just a thought, why don't you invite DC to perform a clog dance. The answer to both your problems!

Oops sorry DC no disrespect mean't.

Yup DC and Daisy I am a wooos, luv you both really. Doesn't some wine make you brave and silly at the same time.

Wish I was there with a glass of Angorra in hand, hope everyone has a good night.

gilken, im sorry you're in Wales, as you also seem likeminded in trying to identify this spider. Anyway the third one down on the right, is a strong contender...however it didn't have any hair on the legs and it was more lime coloured than yellow...but this is definitely on the right track...it says this is in the US....so if this is the one, whats it doing in Cyprus??!!

Sporty...i'm afraid it's gone now...i have only the video i made on my phone...

boglefan...i wear shorts..but not the very short types...my hair isn't in straggley bunches...and as for 2 hot guys in a red car...chance would be a fine thing!! And nothing wrong with being a wooos....it can be sweet...in moderation

gilken, i googled the Banded argiope...which is the i thought looked like it...and sadly it's definitely not the one...but as i said, fairly similar, so keep it up....btw, i'm so glad someone else is spending time trying to identify this with me...and it's doubly hard for you as you can't even see the vid!! Well done, and if/when i do meet you i shall definitely buy you a cold one!!

The problem in identification could be that when heavily laden with young, spiders can be massively larger than some pictures and descriptions of type. When moving the heavy base of a poolside umbrella I inadvertently bumped what look like a normal but large spider and was immediately surrounded by many hundreds of tiny red ones scatttering in all directions. The Wildebeest (bless her) told me to get indoors and do some housework as I looked like a p......d Gene Kelly trying to tap dance !
