why would you want to open a HSBC account??? althought the staff there are very good, this is not like the HSBC in england or anything to do with england. My hubby had an account here took ages for his wages to clear, long wait and q's.

We have a villa in Karsiyaka but still live in the uk. We would like a bank as close if possible, but we tried Turk Bank and they were not very helpful so would like to try another. We would also like to be able to use Internet banking while we are in the uk hence why we heard HSBC were the best for this. Any other suggestions please withgood interest rates for lira

The nearest bank to you in Karsiyaka is Iktisatbank in Alsancak next door to Capitano Restaurant. Don't know about their rates but they do have a form of internet banking I believe.

Don't bother with HSBC, or any other bank than Iktisat for that matter. iktisat have good staff, many speak English, the online banking is easy and in english, they have a branch just 5 minutes from Karsiyaka, the interest rates are good... but the best thing, unlike any other bank you will go in (especially Turk Bank) you dont have to sit and wait for hours when there is only 2 people in front of you!!!!

GOOD LUCK!

I have high interest account at HSBC. All successful and well patronised banks have queues but no appointment system. This is true also of Turk Bank where I also have an account. These banks are well established and stable.

New banks like Credit West, Universal Bank and Iktisatbank, having fewer customers and therefore less queueing may offer better service only in the short term. It took me an hour at Credit West just to get a motor insurance quote that was way out of line to others.

In all cases , be sure of what type of account you want beforehand and ask all the questions that you would if opening a UK one. Especially charges, interest rates monthly/annually, drawing rights. ATM card issue, Internet access & terms in English. Pursue any answer that is unclear. Banks that have English speaking customer service reps. like Turk Bank will help a lot.

Choosing a bank because there's no queueing should not be a deciding factor. You don't go to a bank that often that it's a problem

We find Garanti and Creditwest, even Seker, far better than HSBC, all have English speakers on hand and very helpful.

Yes - you can go into any English HSBC branch and open an account for TRNC. Did it myself before I even moved into my place. You can talk to Julie, the English bank manager here, but obviously need to be here to fill in the forms and sign. If you want to talk to Julie, her email is

juliedawnyounger@hsbc.com.tr

ou could phone her as well, but costs from UK would be fairly substantial!

We bank with HSBC in Girne, and our Premier manager there is Dilek. She is excellent, gives great service and speaks excelling English.

We have been very impressed with the Premier Account that we opened. (Although I do realise that not everyone will have adequate funds for a Premier). The good news is that you only need £30,000 in TRNC not the usual £50,000 as UK, to qualify for Premier and once you qualify with the TRNC account, you can link your UK current account to it, making that a Premier too.

We withdraw money, transfer money etc with no charges, and get free travel insurance to boot, for up to a month at a time. The current rate on TL account is 8.25%, but this may depend on the time deposit you take and on the balance. Sterling account .90%.

With the premier account you don't have to queue you just go and see Dilek upstairs. She deals with all my queries and transfers efficiently via email.

Would reccomend Iktisatbank. We have a property in Lapta and use the Girne Branch with a English speaking dept. Most helpful all banking done online apart from times we are holiday over their.

Interest rates will match most.

The branch at Alsancak does not have English speaking. The branch at Karananaglou does have English speaking very helpful and also has ATM outside the door.

Mike.

Something to bear in mind its all very well putting your money into these small time banks that pay high interest but these are the same banks that are auctioning off the properties that they have lent money on. As far as I am aware HSBC do not lend money on property that is going to be sold to a third party, and if they do they will use the owners own property as security

I agree witht the sentiment of msg 32.

Invest with a safe bank to start with, or at least as safe as any can be now, then when you have been here a while and checked out all the banks, their problems and pitfalls then spread your risk a bit.

I have nothing against TRNC banks, we use Iktisatbank and Credit West but you need to be here to do your proper research.

Last thing we were with HSBC but moved now to Garanti another Turkish commercial bank.
