We are to retire at the end of September to Northern Cyprus. We will be keeping our direct debit payments to Sky and taking our Sky box with us (as recommended on this website). However we also have Sky internet - does anyone know whether this will work, and if so how, and if not what is the way round it? Thanks

Chick,

M's in the extreme will probably come up with an easier option, but as far as I know, you will still download via your dish, so no problem there.

However, you presently upload via the telephone line this will be the problem with using the Sky service.

You can have a VOIP phone with a UK (even your existing) number.

Easy to arrange, all UK calls included, 8 pound a month, plus 3months free (Not the oversubscribed SKYPE).

However, what is the point of staying with Sky and paying for internet in UK and internet in Cy, you will need local net for a VOIP phone line as you will likely never get a regular phone line, and if you did it would be international calls to upload, just not practical.

I am afraid by far the easiest will be to drop sky, you may need to change your email if you use a sky email, and set up in Cy with a local provider.

You will be told by many that theirs is best, no problems etc.

But, the 'best' connection depends on where you are in proximity to a base s

Chicken,

You won't be able to keep your Sky Broadband as it goes through your telephone line and not your Sky Dish. All you need to do is tell Sky that you no longer want Broadband and/or SkyTalk (if you have that package too). They will enquire why.....DON'T TELL THEM YOUR MOVING COUNTRIES otherwise they will cut your Sky off too.

Once your hear, speak with your neighbours and see what Internet service they have and if its reliable. Then go with them. it will cost a lot more than the UK, but that's Wireless Technology for you.

Hi Chicken

re msg 1

Good advice not to cancel your SKY TV subs..

I'm presuming your internet with SKY comes via ADSL - telephone line. Do you have SKY talk ( telephone package) with them?

How you cancel is important. ..Especially if your telephone service is with SKY. You can find my email in my profile !

If you are going to port ( move) your UK land line tel number to a voIP ( voice over Internet Protocol ) supplier - you need to do this before you leave.

When you arrive in Cyprus you need a good quality internet connection, as if you are using voIP, if the internet is slow / restricted - your conversation will stutter to the recipient.

Hi Blackjock..

I have answered on the premise that the poster has NOT got internet coming via a dish. But this is easy to check..

Chicken.. does your internet box from SKY have any aerial thickness leads attached, or just a telephone line running to the wall socket

Thanks mmmmmm, We do have Sky talk with them. Can't get to your email address, but would appreciate some clear guidance on what to do. As far as I am aware just the telephone line into the wall socket, but I will check to clarify. Thanks

Hi Chicken

I'm guessing that your internet WILL be via the phoneline ( ADSL)

You can contact me on:

cy44@uktvabroad.com

Then we can find a way to talk to get you what you want.
