Just wanted to post this again as it was the teacher himself who responded, which I am grateful for.

If anyone else is reading this do they know any other teacher who teaches privately.

Selim is 65 lire per hour, do you lot out there think at the end of the day this is a good price for one to one lessons and if one paid less in a group they would not progress as quickly, so its money well spent?

Very much depends on how much Turkish you learn, and /or if it is conversational Turkish or Grammar related

Conversational wasnt discussed, just grammar. How many lessons per week would you suggest?

I went to group lessons for years and never got anywhere but now have private lessons and I feel I have learnt so much more. I live in Catalkoy but my lessons are in Girne. If you want the name of the teacher and prices please email me off board.

How much!!!!

65tl an hour!!!!!

That is 25 sterling an hour.

8 hours 200 sterling a day

1000 sterling a week

I can guarantee the teachers in both the English and Turkish schools don't get anywhere near that.

I suppose the teacher has the necessary permits degrees and PGCE that other teachers are required to have.

Knowing a few teachers here 65 TL per hour is at the higher end of but not out of the average range. Most teacher only get an erratic few hours a week of private lessons so its not as lucrative as first appears. Charging a lot less per person for group lessons probably brings in a more reliable income as private lessons tend to be erratic and often people only do a few due to the cost or motivation etc. People tend to stick to group lessons more.

Before 'splashing out' on lessons, why not borrow or buy some 'conversation tapes', first?

'Deniz Plaza' bookshop sell English/Turkish phrase books. We bought one entitled 'Turkish Phrase Book & Dictionary' - it's the same size as the 'Berlitz' books, but looks a bit thicker; i.e., more pages - good value, I would say!
