Can anyone explain to me when you can just have a meter and not need builders electric? we are not on a developement, we bought land and had a builder do the shell, all the other work is being done on a job and pay basis. There is an electrician doing the wiring. The swimming pool is up and running- finished before we wanted it as it suited the builder! but now we are being charged 230ytl a month just for the electricity to run the pumps is this reasonable? and at what point could we have a kibtec meter? can anyone advise please

As I understand it, Kibtek have to approve the site before they will connect permanant electric and the builder has to have a building licence. If they had no licence to build I dont think you can get Kibtek approval unless they get one afterwards. Sometimes if there is more than one house on builders electric the builder will put a temporary meter in to see who is using what but this wont be the same as your full Kibtek meter and connection directly to full mains electric.

So who approaches Kibtek to approve the site, the builder or the property owner? And if you have no option but to use the builder's electric, who determines the rate charge for this? And what is the average monthly charge and how does this compare to Kibtek rates?

hi i do know that kibtek when dont have meters (like most of the time) try to get you on a monthly flat charge ,the charge is 120ytl for 500kw per month . so you sign and agree to pay this per month without a meter ,when your meter turns up they go on "pay as you use bills" . i have a friend that is on this flat rate ,they use a lot more and nobody checks as long as they keep getting the 120ytl per mon th . during last summer there aircon was on 24/7 and they dont bother chasing the meter up . kav

you mean that : when you are on temporary connection, because there is no meter, they cannot check what you are using?

It depends on your development/property's situation. The builder has to put in an application for electricity which Kib-Tec then use to check against the build when they are ready to give you electric. We have been on builders electric for over 2 years because Kib-Tec will not transfer the electric into our name unless we have a sub-station built at a cost of about £50k (this is for 13 houses and cabling has to come 90 metres from main road despite the fact that we have overhead cables delivering full 240v electric with no problems on site). The issue is that Kib-Tec wants us to build the infrastructure for future development in the surrounding area. We do have a metre so we are only paying for our usage at a rate of 0.55ytl per unit plus tax. This is the standard builder's rate as printed on our bills and is approximately 4 times the normal rate.

Thanks everyone - we are not on a development, just a new house at the end of a little row of houses that have been there for a while, the builder would be licensed but at what stage would Kibtek approve the electric ? still not sure if 280ytl is reasonable for pool pump only per month but thank you for the .55 figure its something useful to work on. I love Northern Cyprus but trying to get a handle on the cost of anything is a full time job in itself. Can anyone recommend where to shop for air conditioning units I had thought about LG but am open to suggestions as to what make to buy it is something I have no experience of coming from Aberdeen!

hi bertie when it comes to air con units there quite a few to choose from and going for lg is a good choice but i would say they can be quite expensive, a word of advice if you go for either arçelik or beko this has exactly the same parts as the lg unit because they make and maufacture all on the same site in turkey!!! another good couple of makes are regal and vestel which again are turkish named products and are very good quality and very reasonably priced hope this helps regards ukturk

As an aside, Air Con units come in different Wattages even though they have the same BTU units. 9000BTU units can be rated as low as 750 watts, but as high as 1100 watts. Before buying check the rating so as not to get overly large bills.

Hi Bertie We have just read our meter for this month and our bill (on builder's rate which has now gone up to 0.56 + tax) comes to 189ytl and this is for the whole house and the pool so I think the charge your builder is quoting is way too high. Ask him for proof from Kib-Tec that the charge is valid. I also think your pool pump must be on for far too long to be racking up this kind of charge. Ask your builder for the project reference for electricity and go and speak to Kib-Tec yourself. Good luck. Jo
