Don't know much about antibiotics, I know there are lots of different names, but don't know what specific ailments they treat. Last week I bought 21 x 500mg amoxycillin for 5.56TL, so 40TL sounds very expensive.......

Debdebs - sounds to me like you were absolutely robbed. Having said that, PierMan - sounds as though you had a right result. Deb - how many did you get for your money?

Chris - I am only a medical sec. As a nurse, what sort of quantity can you expect to get on an NHS script. and at what dosage for the standard charge. PierMans purchase seemed very good value, as far as I am concerned???

Message 4.

Jeannie It depends on the dose, the type and how long you take the antibiotic for. Also depends on the nature of the infection that is being treated.

For example in the UK we would treat an ear infection with Penicillin 500mg every 6 hours for an adult. To buy a pack over the counter (which you can't in the UK) but the price anyway is around £2 for a pack of 28 and that would be the standard for 7 days.

Sorry without specifics i can't tell you if the 40 tl debdebs paid was good value or not.

Pierman

What you paid for amoxicillin was a brilliant price they retail in the UK at £7.50 if it is the 500mg capsules that you have the 250 mg tabs are a lot cheaper at around £1.80.

This is always the case with medecines purchased in TRNC. When I first noticed (Some years ago) i too was slightly miffed. BUT have now come to ignore it since the price seems to be standardised throughout TRNC chemists.

So rather than go off the deep end , go back to your chemist and ask, pleasantly, for an explanation. OR go to another chemist and ask how much they charge.

Penacillin is always the cheapest antibiotic by far and pretty effective too... thats why doctors in the uk normally prescribe that one first, as long as you aren't alergic to it.

If penacillin doesn't seem to be working, they often do a blood test to ascertain what the infection is and which other (*more expensive!) anti-biotic would be more effective.

I am allergic to penacillin and often ask for Ciproxin which is effective for many respitatory and other , eg water infections -but costs a fortune to prescribe !!!

I had the same antibiotics as debdebs from the pharmacy near the Ezic on the main road. Also cost 40.66 but this was a printed yellow label and nothing underneath it. Still think they were expensive though. Next time if I need them I'll ask for the Turkish name - sefuroksim aksetil. sefalosporin 500mg

Your tablets are otherwise known as Cefuroxime and is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin pronounced (sef a low spor in). An effective drug for bacterial infections if taken as prescribed.

The price of all, what you would know as "Prescription" medicines in the TRNC is controlled by Turkey. The price can change on a weekly or normally monthly basis but are all listed in the chemists leaflets produced by the government. All prices should be the same - give or take the odd Kurus - for the same medication anywhere in the TRNC on a given day.

Expect to see multiple lables of different costs on boxes, it is a normal thing but they should be a yellow label.

My own medication for high blood pressure can vary up to 6 TL in price throughout the year - I doubt you have been "seen off" but a check with any other chemist will ease your mind.

Almost certainly, the cheaper price underneath was the price in mainland Turkey where drugs are much cheaper than in the TRNC. The yellow label price is correct for here.

I had to have Enfexia antibiotics which were also prescribed by a doctor. I cant remember exactly how much they were but I remember thinking how expensive they were compare to amoxycillin.
