We are moving to TRNC and are considering what TV system/service to get whilst we are there. We do not have Sky, we use Freeview in the UK and are happy with that. I heard Dopi was good but then saw on this forum 'Dopi down again'. We are looking for a 'reliable' system/service so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Katymackem I think you best bet would be to put TV in the search bar above and read the topics as there are many. Karen

Hi In that case you realise that the only system which is reliable is to have a huge dish and subscribe to Sky. Most of the other systems available are illegal and are subject to scrambling of channels. There are various other ways available. I've just bought a slingbox and will be streaming through that. Markymark will be able to help you (he's now known as mmmmmm). Karen

D-Smart. One off payment. Buy the monthly Magazine or google them and find out if the English programs are sufficient for your needs. Richard

Cathrine Tap in 'D-Smart' into Google then TV guide, use 'Translate' on your screen and look at the choice of programs! Richard

In my 2 year experience D-Smart is completely reliable and completely legal and no scrambling of channels. Also just a normal sized dish.

Dear Katymackem If you are residing here and CAN fit a 4.2m then THAT is what I recoomend.. no need to subscribe to SKY... If you can't wont strectch to that then a 1.8m will get you many UK channels but not BBC 1-4.. but you can get BBC news 24, Sky newsTV, C4s and Five stuff.... with a sub you'll get much more.. and you SHOULD consider HD.. as the signal is SO much stronger.. IF you want a small dish and don't mind Arabic ads then a 1m dish pointed at Nilesat is again subcription free and will give you approx 10 channels inc BBC World news and euronews.... you can add a subscription to this..

Hector TV/Sat shops for the box, different makes but the one I've got is GoldMaster. Make sure it has a card (CC size) and negotiate £'s for the installation & dish, best to have two as it broadens the TV choice. Richard

Hi Balde Eagle.. You would get: All BBC stuff radio and TV, ITV 1 ITV4, ITV2, C4, Film four, More$, Five, Five US, Five life and much more.. ALL without a SKY subscription Cost.. There are folk advertising installation for 1899 GBP.. but THE guy who imports the dishes and INSTALLS - THE best installer on the island - won't quote without visiting the site. http://skycyprus.com The Iceman- he has been doing this for years and whilst he may not come out the cheapest.. he will be around - if something goes wrong..

Dear Stewart >>Could a dish, serve more than one tv....could it serve 6 apartments in a block? << YES! A dish can serve each apartment - as if they each have a dish.. BUT.. the kit to do this means the signal is reduced.

Dear Stewart You can't really boost a sat tv signal - there is no substitute for inches ( size of dish) as they say! You can fit one dish and it can supply as many sat receivers as you like - as long as the cable runs are 100m or greater, and good quality cable is used You can contact me off board - if you want to go into specifics!

Dear mmmmmm - we are investing in a new hd tele - we have 2 number 1.8m dishes and at present have Dsmart box-next ye9950cis. This was a one off payment nearly 2 years ago - and channels we receive are mostly turkish with bbcworld, nat geo, discovery etc. and several film channels - some english and some sub-titled.We would like to receive a top package including bbc 1-4 itv1-5 and sports channels. We are complete dinosaurs!! can you help us find a suitable package - and installer? Our Dsmart agent recommends we upgrade but even that dont seem what we are looking for. Will we receive more channels going for an hd television? failing all that - its down to the pub!! thanx

Iceman is THE Sky expert in Cyprus (North and South). We live in Esentepe and had a 1.8m dish installed by Iceman two years ago. Never had to return to adjust and is always on the end of the phone advise. Not the cheapest as mentioned elsewhere but I've seen what some of these other cheaper installers are like, no contest!

Dear Rolly re msg 21 The only way you will get BBC1-4 and some of the ITVs is via a 4.2m dish...there is a company saying you will get this with a 1.8m, but it is rebroadcasting without permission and charging enough that you would pay for the 4.2m in four years - not that they will last a year.. IF you can "forget" BBC-1-4 you CAN get a 1.8m installed by the Iceman that will allow reception of ITV1/ C4 / Fives. Should you subscribe, using an HD box you will get your fav Natural history / Documentary stuff in HD !

I am sure I will be corrected if I have this wrong but if you have a non HD reciever the signal will be converted to standard and therefore even with an HD TV it will be a standard signal. I believe you need an HD compliant reciever/decoder box for the signal to be transferred as HD to your television. However, at the moment there are not that many HD broadcasted channels available especially not on the system I have. As I said, if I am wrong I will probably be corrected and if so I will be grateful. We live and learn or we stay ignorant and fall behind. Paul

Hi Paul ! re 29 not bad.. ;) re 28 Spanna You have a full HD TV - it is cable of showing at a resolution of 1080 dots per inch - HD ready TVs can show up to 720 dpi In reality the differences in picture quality between a 1080i picture on a 1080-line screen and a 1080i picture downscaled to 720p are minimal unless you’re talking about really large screen size.. [ quote from http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/news/2006/05/04/Sky-Drops-720p-Output/p1 ] SKY broadcast over 30 channels in HD,( most receivable in CY) but you'd have to have an SKY+ HD receiver and use the HDMI lead ( not a scart lead) to RECEIVE pictures in HD. OR you could buy a Blu-ray DVD player, but you'd have to use a Blu-ray disc, too
