See: - http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/10751.asp I have to admit that I used the Driving School near the Police Station, rather than battle through the various offices... - wimp!

I already have a UK driving licence, but I believe I need to get a Turkish equivalent to allow me to continue driving in the North.

Dumyat, That's right! Perhaps you didn't bother to read the link that I posted... Take all your documents (Everything, including your Grannie's Birth Certificate *joke*) along to the driving School near the Police Station in Girne. That's near the Wednesday Market, up the road where the fountain is. They will process your application for you. Or you can do it the hard way (well, easy according to some ) and go to Lefkoşa and do it yourself. As I say, I took the easy way out! Keith.

You can do it in Girne now at the tax office thats where I renewed mine last month takes about 1 month to return, although they say 2 weeks. Just get a cypriot friend to help you fill in the form and it tells you what documents you need on there. If you do it yourself the first time then the next time is easy. Not sure how many years they will let you have the first time but get 10 years if possible it will save you money in the long run as they do rise in price every year or so. I wonder if it is the same chap at the driving school that done many of us brits residencies 9 years ago only too find out 2 years later they were all illegal and we had to do the whole process again. Some of us were even arrested at the airport on our return from the uk. Can anyone else remember this and his name I believe was something like Yayla??? This is not gossip but fact so only passing on some info.

Tarry is right - you need to just go to the tax office in Girne with your UK driving licence and passport (might not need your passport but just in case). The tax off office is just passed the fountain roundabout in Girne, turn left, coming from Alsancak direction, and it's 50m down on the left. You will also need some passport photos - these are about 10TL for 8 from the photoshop opposite Astro in Girne, and some post office stamps (i think about 7TL) but when i went thay actually sold them to me there. If you don't have a Turkish friend then they will help you with teh form. Once you have paid - it cost me 200TL for 3 years - they will give you a pink slip. Basically you can then show that to the police if you get pulled over, and then your licence will be there in 2-3 weeks. It's very easy and shoud only take you half an hour or so... or you could go to the driving school and pay them to walk 50m and do it for you!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

Seems easy enough, applied for mine yesterday. We drove own to Lefkosa, the office was empty, the staff helpful, needed photocopies of my UK License and my passport, as well as a couple of passp size pics. Filled the form in, waited for 5 mins and need to go back in a weeks time!

Really helpful. I didn't realise (though should have) that I would need another licence. How long can you drive on your UK licence?

When I did mine the first license had to be done in Lefkosa Renewals can then be done in Girne. As far as I know that hasn't changed.

Hi Does any one know how much the driving school charge you for processing the application for a driving licence. Its costs 200TL for 3 years if I were to go to Lefkosa and process myself. Thanks

My understanding is that you can now do your first licence at the Girne office. I might be wrong (doesn't happen very often) but it would be worth going there first before making the trip to Lefkosa or paying the driving school. Msg 10 - 3 months
