If a car were to be brought into the TRNC (with the UK plates still on, i.e no TRNC tax has been paid), does the car have to leave the country when the registered owner does?

No,the car can stop here without having to pay any tax for many years. The rules state that the owner of the car can keep it on the island as long as the owner spends no more than 52 weeks here before paying import tax. For example, you bring a car in and then you only spend 2 weeks of the year here then you can keep the car 26 years before paying import duty, you do however have to find someone to take your import form to Nicosia customs EVERY month to be stamped.

Tell that to the many expat car owners who have had their car impounded & auctioned off by Customs.

Forget it. Too costly and frought with red tape and hazards. Just go to TIGA Trading in Lefcosa and a good deal will be had. We did.
