If you return from the uk and find that you have an electric bill for 380tl whilst the property is unoccupied and there are wires from your meter to a wooden shack next door, do you inform the police or the electricity company? A good question I hear you ask, well the police just seem to put there heads down and say we will try and get there sometime, but dont turn up. Now if I dont pay this bill they will cut me off and take the meter according to the electric company as it is not there problem. The biggest laugh is, I put the fuse inside the property before leaving and now they have obviously stolen another and replaced it, so as too steal my electricity. What a great country Cyprus has turned out to be so honest and helpful and the kindness of the authorities is second to none............!!!!!!!!!!!

Since the electricity used is recorded by the meter it does not involve Kib-tek. It is theft from you and therefore it is between you and the police. The police are never in a hurry to get to the spot but they should get there eventually. Just keep pressing them and see their chief. Do not forget to take some pictures and also show the evidence to third parties like a neighbour or friend but not a close relative. You can sue the person yourself for damages but so what? You are really after punishment rather than compensation and thus you should keep pressing the police to take action. ismet http://www.elkocyprus.com

i suppose you could try a lock on the meter cabinet, not i suppose that it will make much diffrence if they really want to steal your electric, but at least if there was a lock on it with a photograph taken of it locked, then maybe the police would act if you reported damage to the lock on your meter cabinet. you never mentioned if you spoke to the people or person in the shack where the wires were going to from your meter?

Am I wrong to think that 1: If you leave your house for some time 2: and you remove the big black fuse 3: nobody can steal your electricity and 4: if someone one way or another makes a connection to your main cable - the illegal use won't show on your meter?

| Bazilbrush, I have a feeling that the person who stole your electricity knows the system here will allow them to get away without paying for it. I may be wrong but the North Cyprus Free Press at http://www.northcyprusfreepress.com would be very interested in publishing the evidence of this theft and how the authorities deal with it. | Hans, They replaced the main fuse, probably stolen from someone else and stole electricity after the meter. It is theft from the owner of the house rather than from Kib-tek. If it was from Kib-tek, the police would certainly bring criminal charges. This is what they should do in any case. A theft is a theft, it does not matter from whom. ismet |

RE msg 6, Ismet: (...) They replaced the main fuse, probably stolen from someone else (...) => A good lock on the box with the KibTek electricity meter would at lest make it more difficult to replace the main fuse.

Msg 9 Pipie, If they are conecting their cable to your meter that is the two connections on the left at the bottom then they are stealing from you, as this will be registerd on the meter as "consumed" units, but if they make their connection into the black unit on the incoming road or overhead cable then they are stealing from KIbtek i.e. not registered.

why do they place meters outside? if this is what happens, i would want an inside meter otherwise you are not safe to leave you holiday home and the police it seems from several threads are not in the least bit interested

RE msg 13, AlexFO65: (...) why do they place meters outside? (...) => Because KibTek staff check your meter once a month - whether your home or not - and leave the bill in the box where the meter resides.

Install a step-up transformer so next time they use your elex it will blow all their appliances and hopefully ruin all the wiring setting fire to the shack! That will teach them a lesson! Richard

Thanks for that info Dutch so the advice to the chap to put a heavy padlock on his meter would not be anygood either then? if the Electricity supply company want that much access to read the thing what exactly can a person do to protect themselves against this type of thing?

Zerochlor I didnt go to the shack and knock on the door, as then they would go and remove the wires and I would lose my evidence, so will wait for the police to handle it. The annoying thing is that the meter is wizzing round even though they are at work, so god only knows what they have on in there. I am not staying at the property so it is not me using the power. Another english couple will have a bigger shock (sorry about the pun) when they return as another thicker wire is running across the yard to a block of flats that is occupied and their kibtek bill amounts to a staggering 4,750 tl. I will let you all know the outcome of this situation as it could be you next.

The property is in Lapta close to the rose garden hotel. The police have been and I have been paid the amount owing. The police spoke with a worker that said he was only taking electric for a light bulb and a fridge which was true as we checked. The electric was being used by someone else in a block of flats who was waiting for his meter to be installed. The police said that I should not turn the switch off otherwise these people would have no electric? Anyway there is nothing I can do as long as the money is being paid which I am ok with at this time. At least the police turned up and had some result. I think it was all to do with somebody that was doing the management on site but had gone back to the uk for a while. Just another day in another year in Cyprus but still enjoying it here so hey.......... just keep smiling.

msg 20: elko says, "Next in line is a visit by Kib-Tek who will cut off your supply because you have been selling electricity to others illegally" Oh Elko, just when bazilbrush was calming down! I take back all I said about the police not coming round and sorting the problem out but you would have thought they would have warned you that selling electricity was illegal!!!! Mal

Hi Basilbrush I would just like to shed some light on your opening thread of 'stealing electric' and to highlight what the true facts are with regard to the apartment complex that was named. As you are very much aware now the site had the full permission of the owner to use there electric meter to power one of our blocks, which still after 18 months of waiting for the biulder to 'pull his finger out' has still yet to be signed off by Kibtec. If,it wasn't for the help and support by the owner,6 English owners of this block would not of been able to use there apartments at all over the last 18 months, which i might add they have paid up in full. This is a system that we had to adopt and with contributions made by the owners the electric bill is paid every month without fail. The additional feed to 'a shed' is also treated in the same way.The 4700+ lira bill actually belongs to the builder as he used our pool meter to feed his rented apartments over a 15 months period without paying one bill!

cont'd As i totally understand that stealing electric is common place on certain sites and it is a very good idea to highlight what does happen from time to time. Our site is well organised and all the Brits that own on the complex have a great attitude towards 'getting things done' and ensuring that our site continues to be one of the best in the area.If it wasn't for the builder who, like most these days, has run out of money we wouldn't need to take these unusual steps.Just to put the record straight.

Mod 63 Hi I would just like to point out that I did not mentioned the name of the apartments on my opening thread. There was a question asking me if it was a certain block but I did not replied to that message. I hope you understand, that if the situation had been explained to me in the first instance by certain parties then this posting would never of been sent. I am still amazed though even after things have been ironed out, that the police said I shouldn't disconnect the supply to the other properties. AMParently I am not being CHARGED as it was not my VOLT which doesnt SHOCK me. Sorry about that .
