Article in the Saturday intranet version of the Cyprus Mail:

It looks like that both communities are going to work together to try and make this happen. It has taken a water shortage to focus minds............

This project has been under way for some time, the current obstacle is a deep water channel between Turkey and here.

The proposals to solve this issue are quite costly but the target still remains as 2 - 3 years.

If Greek Side are going to come along with some money then that would be of help but I do not see any advancement on a completion date.

This subject came up many years ago and Makarios vetod it becaue the Greek Cypriıts did not wish to rely on Turkey in any way. I bet the Greek Cypriot politicians will reject it again.

Hi all,

I think the EEC will pay, as a sweetner for the negotiations.

Exactly - push EU money at it - worth while IMO - if helps towards a positive outcome - but given the track record on this - it could be a long shot. Who knows spiralling water costs - shortages and the knock on effects to the economy and hit peoples wallets - may as I said focus minds

Hi all,

At last the powers that be are starting to take notice of this potential catastrophic disaster. As the years go on the situation will get worse.I agreee with you John re-the sweetener.Money should be no object with this one,as potentially you could be talking about the loss of thousands of lives human and animals. This somes the problem up in a nutshell.

"Water can contribute to peace. Both sides are thirsty and nature has caught up with us in the sense that this is an island which is vulnerable to water shortages.Nature does not see green lines. Were all in the same boat and were sinking,

Regards,

Paul.

The situation is indeed dire.

The government have now declared that because the resevoirs and boreholes are so low that some bottled water taken from those sources is unsafe for human consumption and has ordered the removal of several brands of bottled water from supermarkets as a safety measure.

Better get that pipe laid quickly me thinks

hi guys

the things most and foremost here in turkey the water pipe has always been covered by the media that it will be built and operational asap to help out north cyprus water problem and no mention has been said that it will provide south cyprus aswell as the north contary to what media are saying outside turkey

firstly turkey as a nation do not reconise south cyprus as legitamte country and never will until it reconises the north, turkey has banned any turkish companies to deal with any south cypriot companies plus on top of that turkey wont allow any boats or planes bearing a south cypriot flag to cross over any turkish water or airspace!!!!! so this decision is not down to the south cypriots to accept this water pipe or not its turkey, im so glad the shoe is on the other foot for a change!!!!

anyway the greek and greek cypriot government have already signalled out they have got boats ready to ship water over to cyprus to help with the shortage, do you think they will be supplying the north any water i dont think so!!!!

regards

uturk

p.s the greek cypriot media are saying the greek cypriot community are scared that if they accept this pipe from turkey the north will cut the water when they decide too just out of spite, well they know what spite is dont they!!!! years ago the north used to borrow electric from the south and when the greeks decided to switch off the power they did and would not put it back on for days sometimes!!!!
